Half-Day and Overnight in SLO then North?

Fellow TripAdvisors,

After a Yosemite visit, we have 1.5 days to do route 1 from __X__ back to San Francisco. I am thinking of driving early to arrive in SLO around 1 or 1:30pm. Would this leave us enough time for a casual/picnic lunch (where?) and to see Big Sur? We would stay the night in SLO or Cambria then get up early to drive north for a full day making stops along the way and finish our drive in San Fran in the later evening.

At this point in our trip we'll have done San Fran, Napa, Yosemite and we'll be looking for relaxation and some good views. The other option would be start in Monterey and Drive North?

Really trying to make the best of our 1.5 days on PCH, please provide your best suggestions to do so. It's much appreciated.

OR!? What about driving from Yosemite to Hearst Castle for an afternoon or evening tour, then heading to Cambria for quiet dinner/evening. Up early for full day drive with stops along coast the following day ending in San Fran.

I wouldn't plan to go up to Big Sur and then back to SLO or Cambria for the night. Spend that half day in the area and then head up the next day.

Some options: Montana de Oro state park is a nice spot for a picnic and hiking along the coast. There are wineries in the Edna valley just south of SLO, and of course, lots in Paso Robles area east of Cambria. If you happen to be there on a Thursday night, the farmers market in downtown SLO is a good event.

I've always tended to think of Avila Beach and Pismo Beach as the northern fringe of the SoCal sun-and-swim beach area, while Morro Bay and northwards is more walking and tide-pooling beach and less swimming. It's by no means an exact transition, but it is a rough reference point.

Your original post is kinda confusing. You make it sound as though you would be driving from Yosemite down the coast through Big Sur to SLO and then driving back up again the next day. That would be at least an 8 hour drive on Day 1!

I suggest driving from Yosemite to Cambria via Highway 41/46, Hearst tour late afternoon and spending the night in Cambia. Then you have a full day for the drive up through Big Sur, Monterey/Carmel, Santa Cruz, etc.. to SF.

SLO, Pismo/Avila would put you further south than you need to be.

Go to SLO or Cambria BEFORE Big Sur. Have a nice dinner (available in both places) and a relaxing evening; then get up in the morning and enjoy the glorious drive up Highway One. You will have all the amazing views you can handle...if you don't run into fog, that is.
