Seeing Hearst castle

We are flying into San Jose on a Thursday by noon and planning to stay Friday night in Monterey. Is it realistic to drive to Hearst castle Thursday, go on a tour, stay near there and drive to Monterey Friday? If so, what would be the best routes and what city would you suggest staying over night in?

Not likely. By the time you claim your luggage, get a rental car and get down to San Simeon, it will probably be well past the last tour time. You could take a tour Friday morning before driving up to Monterey, though. Hearst Castle to Monterey is about a 2 1/2 to 3 hour drive without stops.

Suggest overnighting in Cambria should you decide to do this. It's about a 10-15 minute drive to Hearst Castle from Cambria.

I agree with Kibblesmom. What if your flight was delayed? Your only real choice right now to get to Cambria or San Simeon is via Highway 101, to Highway 46 West to Highway 1 since Highway 1 is closed at the moment 50 miles north of San Simeon due to a slide that happened about 2 weeks ago.

Take your time without the stress of missing a tour on Thursday and drive down, have a nice dinner and take in the scenery, stay overnight in Cambria or San Simeon, and then take your tour the next morning. After the tour, you can wander the grounds as long as you care to and then leave to make your way north back to Monterey. Much less stress that way.

You should make a reservation for a Friday am Hearst Castle tour. You can do this online.

I think the idea to take 101from the airport to 46 to Cambria (or San Simeon) on Thursday and tour Hearst Castle the next morning is a good one. (Cambria, with a motel on Moonstone Beach would be my choice.)

Then you can drive up the famed Big Sur Coast the next day after your tour and have time to enjoy the drive.

FYI- Highway 1 opened in both directions again this week but is limited to one lane where they are doing construction. I've heard from people on the road that it's about a 30 to 40 minute wait to go through this spot, but otherwise it's driving as usual.

Keep in mind that it is impossible to drive along the Big Sur Coast and not stop. There are so many beautiful vistas.
