Hotels inland - Santa Barbara and around

Hiya. We're looking for a clean, safe hotel or motel with a decent sized pool (the pool really matters as we're from Scotland and only get to sunbathe whilst on holiday!) near/ish to Santa Barbara.

We are willing to stay up to half an hours drive inland, as we'll have a car. We would go as far north as SLO.

Have been trawling the site for ages trying to find a good hotel, but they all seem quite overpriced just to be near the beach, which isn't our main priority anyway.

Budget would be up to $300 a night in early September for a really special place, but would ideally prefer to spend half that. (One of our all time favourite hotels was a $60 Best Western that just happened to have a great pool and be in a quiet spot in upstate NY.)

Any ideas really appreciated.

If you are going to Santa Barbara, then plan your trip during the week and avoid the weekends. The town fills up on the weekend with people from LA.

The Best Western's are all good in Santa Barbara. The Pepper Tree being the best of the lot.

Also, if you want to stay close to Santa Barbara then check the rates at the Best Western in Carpinteria. This town is very close to SB and takes about 15 minutes to commute

The best swimming pool(s) is at the Fess Parker. This would be a good choice if you could get a good rate.

San Luis is quite far from Santa Barbara, but worth a visit on it's own. It's lovely and has some excellent wineries in the area.
