Planning on taking Amtrak to Santa Barbara with little kids

We are planning on taking a train ride to Santa Barbara. There will be 5 adults and 7 little kids (2 and 3 years old) in our group. We will be staying at the Colonial Beach Inn which is close to the beach and the Amtrak station. Any suggestion for kids friendly restaurants and activities we can do there?

Thanks,

Cindy

The Santa Barbara Zoo is a wonderful small zoo. It has lots of grass areas, animals and a playground as well as a train ride. Perfect for toddlers and adults.

Take the kids to Stearn's Wharf, it's very pretty. the SB Shellfish Co has great food and if very family friendly, there are tables set up outside there where you can take in the views and enjoy the scenery here. Have fun! :)

juxie & syrahgirl, thank you for the ideas. Should we rent a car or just ride the bus to get around?

The suggestions you have been given, your hotel, and the train station are very accessible by the shuttle bus and you can walk too. It only costs 25¢ pp, too. Bring quarters, because it won't make change. El niños will be free. So your charge will be $1.25.

The city's primary tourist areas are Cabrillo Ave and State St, which the shuttle bus prowls during the day. Otherwise, if you want to get further out to the Mission or Botanic Garden you'll have get on the regular bus, line 22.

You might find it fun to rent a bicycle surrey and pedal the beach boardwalk. Walking the harbor breakwater is also pleasant. Then take the Lil' Toot Water Taxi over to Stearns Wharf.

Rent a car and you can wine taste the Santa Ynez Valley, take in the views from atop the Santa Ynez Mountains from Camino Cielo, or dip your toes in the Santa Ynez River at Paradise Road.

1. The Santa Barbara Zoo, without a doubt, it is quaint and small but beeautiful (takes less than 4 hours to see everything)!!!

2. The Sea Center on Stern's Wharf. A very small aquarium but very hands on for the kids. My kids LOVE it and it takes only about 1.5 hours to see it all.

3. There is a GIANT park with a huge wooden playstructure with bridges, things to climb on, swings and slides at Alameda park (corner of Micheltorena St. and Santa Barbara St.). All kids love this play area and its certainly the largest outdoor play area that I'm aware of.

4. In Oak Park they have a kids splash pool (its only like 10 inches deep) and lots of fun play equiptment. It located just off the 101 at the Pueblo offramp).
