best way to go

I'm getting a few different routes of travel.

Need advice going from Santa Barbara to San Diego.

Do we want to avoid hwy 405?

We can travel any time during the day.

Thank You

Just go 101 south

merge onto the 405 south

merge onto the 5 south.

all of these freeways will be busy around rush hour am and pm.

the 405 near LAX will be slow. But if there's no accidents, and you go in the carpool lane, it'll pass quickly!

405 is always slow - but it is the best route to get to San Diego. Try to avoid rush hour traffic if you can.

We've driven home many times from Santa Barbara to the LAX area after a long weekend, on the 101 to the 405.

We leave SB between 9-10 am. It takes no longer than two hours at that time of day. San Diego would be another 2 hours beyond LAX. As long as you are out of LA in the early afternoon, you will be ahead of commuter traffic.
