Dream Inn on West Cliff drive is easy walking distance and the best bet for the area.

If he doesn't have a 4mm wetsuit I'd rent one for the trip and have booties, gloves and hood :)

The Dream Inn is a wonderful hotel, right on the bay. It is a joie d'vivre hotel. Every room has either a balcony or patio facing the bay. However, it is quite expensive. If it is over the budget look into Seaway, which is across the street from that or Edgewater Beach hotel, on a hill above that, or Beach Street Inn, just a block away.

Yes, the Dream Inn is considered the best.if it's too much $$$, I know some people who like the Sea and Sand that's right next door. Maybe check out the TA reviews for the scoop from past travelers.

BTW, O'Neil's has a special phone number with the daily surf report.

The Sea and Sand is a very nice, smaller, hotel but I did not mention it because the room rates are usually on a par with the Dream Inn (location, location) and the Dream Inn has more features.

Thank for all the tips! Will book The Dream Inn, call O'Neil's for surf forecast and make sure he is warm enough in the chilly water! thanks all!!

Dream Inn is very nice and they have a great restaurant there, Aquarius where we have dined. There is also Cowell's Surf Shop across the street if you have questions about the area. Have fun! :)

I just checked the rates and the Sea and Sand is cheaper than Dream Inn. Checking the first weekend in Nov (a random future date), the Dream Inn's rack rates are $320-480 while the Sea and Sand's are $160-320. It's possible the Dream Inn offered bigger discounts but just an FYI if the price is an issue. I've never stayed in either but FYI.
