Yes, best bet is the Big Blue Bus #10 freeway express bus from Santa Monica to Union Station in downtown LA. Chances are your Santa Monica hotel will be near one of the stops for this bus, but if not you may need one other bus and then transfer to #10. Let us know what hotel you are at and we can give you more specific directions.

Once you arrive at Union Station take the Metrolink Orange Couny Line train or the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner train to Fullerton. From the train station in Fullerton, take the Orange County Transit Authority (OCTA) bus 43 to Disneyland.

The easiest AND best way to get to DL without a car is to book yourself into a tour, such as offered by Grayline Tours of Southern California. Check their website to see if they pick up at Santa Monica hotels. Most people stay in Anaheim to visit the park.

It helps to know the date of this trip since transit schedules vary as does the opening time for DL but, in general, the quickest and easiest way is as follows (3 steps):

1. Transfer to LAX by taxi or local bus (the Santa Monica #3 bus) which will drop you at the LAX Transit Center (a fancy name for the bus plaza adjacent to LAX). The ride will take 36 minutes and the fare will be $1.

2. Exit the bus plaza onto the sidewalk and turn right. Walk 1 minute to the adjacent parking area labeled "Parking Lot C". Enter the parking area and take the free shuttle to LAX. Get off at the first stop, in front of terminal #1 on a 'traffic island' in the roadway. Above you will be a red sign that says: "Hotel & Parking Lot Shuttles". Walk to the Green Overhead sign and wait for the Disneyland Express Bus.

3. Take the Disneyland Express Bus to its first stop, the Disneyland Hotel. Get off the bus and walk to Disneyland's entrance. (Ask the driver for directions). The Disneyland Express Bus runs once every 30 minutes and the ride takes about 45 minutes (after stopping at all of the terminals in the airport which could take 20 or 30 minutes more). Fare is $99.99 round trip (return) for a family of up to 5 persons.

All told, the cost for the 5 of you will be:

$5 for the Santa Monica bus to LAX (or about $25 for a taxi) -- each way

$99.99 for the Disneyland Bus

for a total of either $109.99 (using the bus from Santa Monica) or

$124.99 is you use a taxi between Santa Monica and LAX.

Transfer time will be as follows:

1. 27 minutes on the #3 bus (or 20 minutes in a taxi)

2. 5 minute walk to parking lot C

3. 5 minute ride from parking lot C to terminal 1

4. Average wait time for the Disneyland Express bus: 15 minutes

5. 70 minutes or so on the Disneyland Express bus

6. 5-minute walk to the Disneyland entrance

Total transfer time: between 120 and 127 minutes (or between 2 hours and 2 hours, 7 minutes).

In order to be at DL by around 9 a.m., you'll need to take the Flyaway from terminal 1 departing at around 8:10. This will land at the Disneyland Hotel (after stopping at the other terminals at the airport) at around 9 a.m. which will get you into DL at around 9:05. In order to reach terminal 1 by 8:10, you'll need to catch Rapid #3 bus from the corner of 4th St & Broadway at 7:11 a.m. (your hotel might be closer to a different stop for the #3), which will arrive at the LAX transit center (bus plaza) at 7:38. Walk to Parking Lot C and take the free shuttle to terminal 1, departing at 7:45 and arriving at terminal 1 at 7:51.

Compare that to Mach's transfer method (also, an excellent option):

1. #10 bus to Union Station -- 1 hour, 10 minute ride (buses run an irregular schedule in the early morning)

2. Metrolinktrains.com or Amtrak.com train to the Disneyland area (Fullerton or Anaheim station). Trains take between 30 and 40 minutes but the waiting time between trains varies.

3. Taxi or bus to DL from the train station (10 to 30 minutes, depending on 'wait time' for the bus).

If you want to be at DL by around 9 a.m., the most time-efficient route would be as follows:

1. Depart Santa Monica on the #10 bus at 6:38 (corner of Santa Monica Bl & Ocean Av -- your hotel might be closer to a different stop). Fare is $2 per person ($10 for the 5 of you). For the return, use your returning rail tickets as fare for this bus.

2. Arrive at Union Station's bus plaza at 7:33 a.m. Enter the train station, buy your train tickets. $7.50 per person, each way or $75 round trip (return) for all of you.

3. Depart Union Station on the Metrolink Orange County train at 8 a.m. Arrive at Fullerton Station at 8:34 a.m

4. Walk to the nearby bus terminal and take the OCTA Bus #43 at 8:52 from parking space #1 at the bus terminal. Show your train tickets as fare on this bus. (For the return bus, pay the standard fare, $1.50 per person ($7.50 for all of you).

5. Arrive at the Disneyland shuttle area at 9:17.

6. Walk to the Park entrance (2 minutes).

Total transfer time: 2 hours, 39 minutes at a round trip cost of $92.50

You can speed up the transfer time by taking a taxi from the train station to Disneyland which will take about 10 minutes and cost $18 to $20 including tip (for a total transfer cost of about $111). If you do this, you'll arrive at DL at 8:45 or so for a total transfer time of 2 hours, 7 minutes.

The above schedules are for a weekday transfer. In general, I like the first method better since the Disneyland Express bus runs on a regular schedule, every 30 minutes. With the second option, you'll have to plan carefully so that the #10's arrival at Union Station coordinates with your onward train.

This board will identify all transit options--that's the great thing about it. The fare structure is very unusual, they'll allow 5 to travel for price of about 3.

The website is unclear though if you have to reserve the Disneyland Express in advance. It says both "no reservations are required" and "you must book 48 hours in advance"!

I was wondering with 5 people whether a private limo transfer is the best option. Alternatively the taxi to LAX and perhaps a private Supershuttle, rather than the Disney express bus.

Good idea to ask at the hotel.

The problem with using public transportation is that you are staying in Santa Monica. It would be easier if you were either downtown Los Angeles, or better yet, take the night and spend it in Anaheim. It seems a shame to spend nearly a $100 per person for a ticket and spend half the day getting there and back.
