end of Route 66 road trip

Hi

Planning our route 66 road trip and just wanted to know should we stay in Santa Monica for the end of the trip and travel into LA to do the tourist bit or stay one night in SM and then 2nights in LA

Any info would be a great help.

Welcome to the forums, aug301961! We usually ask for your rough itinerary to determine that. If most of what you want to see is far from the westside of LA, it's better to stay away from the coast. If you stay at the coast and drive inland for most of your activities, you'll need to pay close attention to rush hours on weekdays (7-9 am and 4-7 pm), and avoid driving then, which can be a hassle.

Haven't sorted itinerary as of yet, so any suggestion on what are must do in LA would be great.

At the moment this is more of a fact finding mission so that i can sort out timings.

Staying in Santa Monica for 2 or 3 nights would probably be better than having to switch hotels. If you have a car it's a very popular area to see LA sites.

Regarding the sites...... There's a multitude of things to do but putting a 'must see' label on areas doesn't always equate to some quality things to see.

Besides Rte 66 things what else interests you?

For your itinerary options, please check the tab at the top of this page and on the LA forum, as we are but a small, beachside community surrounded by LA. There, you'll find more things to do than you can imagine! You'll also see that we locals answer questions on the two forums; so you can ask your Santa Monica questions on the LA forum, too, no problem.

For general planning purposes, if your activities are mostly inland (Hollywood, downtown LA, Universal Studios), it makes more sense to stay in Hollywood, West Hollywood, or downtown. If your activities are more beach oriented, then Santa Monica, Marina del Rey, West LA, Westwood, Century City are more favorable locations. Do know that Santa Monica is very popular and prices, particularly for lodging, will reflect that.

Santa Monica with a car means not needing to switch hotels.

Santa Monica hotels are double that of other areas of Los Angeles, with Hollywood being the cheapest (it's like comparing hotels and area of high end Knightsbridge to Picadilly Circus). If you can afford downtown Santa Monica, stay there without a doubt. What is your budget per night for a hotel?
