Best winery experience if only visiting one

Will be spending short time in Santa Rosa area. Family wants to visit one winery before heading to Bodega Bay area for balance of trip. Which winery would one suggest we visit for overall experience. Setting, outdoor dining/wine tasting/ etc. There are so many to choose from - thanks for your help. Will have rental car so could drive some distance if there is one that stands out close to Santa Rosa. Thanks - RCS in Des Moines.

Would say that we prefer white wines - sauvignon blanc. Thanks.

There aren't many wineries that have restaurants...is that what you were referring to with "outdoor dining"? If you just had picnic facilities in mind, that would be easier....

Do you like champagne? Korbel Champagne Cellars is located on River Rd which will take you all the way to the coast after your visit. They have a free tour, free tasting and a deli with a patio if you wish to eat outside. The grounds are beautiful!

thanks for response. was thinking more of outdoor seating with lovely view of sunset. small plates - cheese and fruit for instance - would be nice. Great way to end the day. Will leave restaurant dining to another venue. Thanks.

"J" winery, just ouside Healdsburg, makes very good sparkling wnes, as well as pinot gris and pinot noir. They offer really tasty food-wine pairings -- almost enough to make a meal. We've done it a couple of times and it's always an enjoyable outing.

Thank you for your sparkling review from your visit to J Vineyards & Winery. We are pleased that you enjoyed your J tasting experience and love our sparkling, Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris wines, as well as the Bubble Room tasting.

We look forward to your next visit to J and wish you happy travels.

Cheers! Elisa, Team J.

Kunde has a very nice mountain top tasting and serves some very good wines up on the hill overlooking the valley.Across the street the Kenwood restaurant has nice patio dining I have not tried the Mayo Family paired wine and food but hear it is quite good.

If on your way to Bodega Bay, Korbel works out well. Its just before Armstrong Redwoods. There is a nice deli there and you can sit outside and look at the redwoods across the road. Its about half way between Santa Rosa and Sonoma Coast ...

The other nice place for an outside lunch (but more expensive) and on the way to Bodega Bay is

or Corks

Kunde, Mayo, etc. are nice....but skip that post as they are not on your route to Bodega Bay...not sure if the poster above caught that part of your post.

We also like Coppola - but its out of the way in terms of driving to Bodega Bay, but does have a good outside and indoor restaurant.

Also about midway on the drive.....it has small plates as well as large plates....and we enjoyed eating there for both New Years Dinner as well as recently at the end of July. They have heat lamps in the patio if cooler out.

My advice - have wine on the way at either Lynmar or Hartford Court on the way and continue on to Bodega Bay for lunch at Terrapin Creek one of the best restaurants in all of Sonoma County - no view from the restaurant but a short drive to the ocean

I'd suggest driving out Westside Road (just west of Healdsburg which is 12 miles north of Santa Rosa). It's a beautiful drive through rolling hills along the Russian River. There are several wineries along this road (Armida--family friendly; Hop Kiln--older more historial; Roshambo--modern, bright; Davis Bynum--great for pinot noirs). For a full list, check here: http://www.westsideroadwineries.com/. Westside Road runs into River Road...which you can follow all the way to the coast. You'll end up about five miles north of Bodega Bay. Turn left and drive along Highway 1 and you'll end up in Bodega Bay.
