parking & walking across Golden Gate

We would like to visit Sausalito for the day (week after Christmas) and include a walk across the Golden Gate Bridge. We will be traveling south on Hwy 101. Could you please advise exit and where to park.

Thank you!

Hmm....are you considering walking all the way across the bridge? And back to get your car?

Are you going to stay in San Francisco or going on south?

There are some logisits to be considered.

We were planning to walk across and back unless you advise otherwise. I believe it is around 4 miles roundtrip. Have also heard about the ferry but not sure how to get that for return trip (or to take it over & walk back). We were then going to have lunch/dinner in Sausalito and return to Davis.

Thank you for your help.

From the vista point on the San Francisco side, across the bridge to Sausalito is more like 4 miles ONE WAY.

If you choose to do this, the exit is just before the toll plaza and is marked "Last SF exit." Be sure to get in the far right lane or you'll miss it -- two lanes come in from Park Presidio Blvd and merge onto Doyle Drive shortly before this exit -- so as they enter, you'll need to move across two lanes to the right. Not impossible but you need to be aware -- if you miss the exit, you'll be out of luck and onto the bridge.

Also the parking lot at this vista point is undergoing some construction but there is additional parking down Lincoln a bit (turn right at the Yield sign and the left onto Lincoln at the Stop).

You could park at the vista point on the north side, walk part way along the bridge, then back and over to Sausalito. The exit for this is just on the north end of the bridge.

Rather than walk along the Alexander Ave offramp, it's better to take the catwalk under the bridge to the west side and then down the service road to Ft. Baker.

If you take the ferry back from Sausalito you'll be quite a ways and two bus rides from your car.

Parking at Sausalito maybe a little far. It seems that since you come from 101 freeway south, maybe you can take the last exit before getting on Golden Gate Bridge (that's Alexander Ave, exit 442 I think). Right turn onto Conzelman Road (where the tourists go). Leave the car at the parking lot overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge. Then walk across GG Bridge and perhaps even to the Baker Beach if you like... then come back.
