Scenic or romantic sonoma coast spots?

Hi everyone. This is a great website.

We are going to visit Napa for a couple of days and would like to see the Sonoma coastline too. Can anyone recommend specific spots that are especially scenic/romantic or are hidden gems? We have read general inforomation about sonona state park but have never been there and would love personal recommendations if anyone has any. Thank you!!!

Sonoma Coast State Park is 17 miles of the Sonoma Coast from Bodega Bay to a few miles north of Jenner.

Jenner is where the Russian River enters the Pacific Ocean and this is a very scenic location. If you cross the River where Highway 1 comes in from the south...just a mile or two away from Jenner you can take a road down to Goat Rock State Beach and see the River come in. Depending upon the tides and winds, this can be pretty dramatic.

Bodega Bay is south of Jenner and there are several State Beaches along its 10-mile stretch.

Bodega Bay is a fishing village where parts of Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" was filmed.

Here is the website for the park.

If you drive from Napa to Sonoma and then take Highway 12 to Highway 101 at Santa Rosa, go north a ways to River Road, that will take you to the coast. (The Sonoma Valley is very pretty and worth a drive through anyway..lots of wineries and vineyards.)

On the way to the coast you will pass through Guerneville and there is a wonderful state park here, Armstrong Grove Redwoods State Park. If you have not seen these trees, you owe it to yourself.

This is a much larger park than Muir Woods, near San Francisco, and does not have the crowds and tour buses.

As an extension, if you drive north of Jenner for 10 miles you will come to Fort Ross State Historical Park. This was an outpost of the Russians in the early 1800's, a trading post for otter furs. They also used it to protect their interests in California from the Mexicans, who ruled California at that time.

I will warn you, however, that the first several miles of the road above Jenner will make you think you are in one of those automobile commercials where the car is winding high on the cliffs with the ocean below. It is a spectacular drive, but this detour would take some time. If you should do this you can take a different route back to avoid some of the curves. Take Fort Ross Road, across from the Park, up to Meyers Grade and go back on that. It is pretty up there and sometimes you get a peek of the ocean.

More than you ever wanted to know? Sorry...I love this territory. Have a great trip.

A favorite place of mine to stop for a walk is not far south of Jenner where there’s a seldom visited stretch of beach that I think provides some of the prettiest views of the rocky coast that there are. Very neat colored rock formations, too. You turn off Hwy. #1 onto Carlevard Way (just north of the turnoff for Wright Beach), then go to the right and park. There’s a trail (in good condition) that heads north along the coastal bluff and after just a short distance you see a path and steps leading down to the beach. It’s moderately steep, but safe to walk.

As long as we are talking about this...just north of Bodega Bay, at Salmon Creek.....where the creek comes in a lagoon forms, depending upon the tide, and since the lagoon is shallow the sun warms it and it is a wonderful place to wade.
