Lodging: Too many options

We (middle aged women) are looking for 3 nights in wine country. We don't especially care if it is Sonoma, Napa, or other area in Northern CA. Of course this site gives a multitude of options with hotels, guest homes, and rentals and it is almost overwhelming. Starting at the top of the various lists, I see that most are in town (Sonoma or other).

Our ideal situation would be a cottage or rental or even a small hotel that is more in the country, centrally located and our dream spot would be in, or in view of, actual vineyards. Any suggestions or at least suggestions in to how to narrow it down? Thanks in advance. We appreciate it.

Look at Glen Ellen or Kenwood, in the Sonoma Valley, Glen Ellen is about 8 miles from the town of Sonoma. Gaige House often gets good reviews.

If you require no more than 2 bedrooms, consider the First Crush Cottage at the Irish Rose Inn (which is a B&B): http://www.firstcrushcottage.com/ Wonderful vineyard location with a stellar winery on the property (Brogan Cellars)--ask about making an appt. for a special wine tasting. You'll also be located just a short drive from the small town of Healdsburg where restaurants, shops and galleries (and more tasting rooms) abound.

If you're OK with staying at an inn, the Beltane Ranch (www.beltaneranch.com) will provide you with the setting you seek. It's close enough to the village of Glen Ellen, Kenwood and Sonoma town that you'll have an array of restaurants, shopping and historic sites all just a short drive away.

It sounds like Beltane Ranch would work well for you. If you stay there, let us know how you like it. We have admired the property many times while driving by and would love to stay there sometime!

Nice places for meals in the area: girl and the fig, Swiss Hotel, Cafe La Haye and El Dorado Kitchen. These are all located right on the Sonoma Square.

Enjoy your time in Sonoma! :)
