Temecula July 2009

We are attending a wedding at Falkner Winery in Temecula this July 2009. Am trying to decide whether to bring 2 kids and husband or go solo. Any advice about Temecula and surrounding area would be great. What airport is best (price and location)? Where are inexpensive but okay places to stay? Are there any more scenic areas within a reasonable drive where we could rent a weekly cabin, etc.? What are good kid-friendly things to do in the area? Thanks!

Temecula is a suburban city with a wine making area that is about 1 hr.+ north of San Diego(SAN airport) . I am not sure how far it is from LAX(Los Angeles) or from SNA(Orange County John Wayne airport)

It is very hot in summer in Temecula.

San Diego has tons of kid friendly things to do.-zoo,Sea World, beaches parks etc.

Disneyland/Knotts, California Adventure are in Orange County

The choice is yours to make.

Hi Longvt - the best airport to use to get to Temecula is Ontario. Second choice would be San Diego, 3rd would be Orange County. Ontario is closer than SD or OC by about 15 minutes. SD is usually more expensive than the other 2, but Orange County, while sometimes cheaper than Ontario, is hard to get to/from during traffic hours, but if you are traveling mid-day - its a very quiet and comfortable airport to use. As far as lodging - you have a couple of options - you can use vrbo.com and see if anyone is offering their home for rent during your stay or you can try the local hotel/motels. As you probably know - Hampton Inn is kid friendly - and we have one of those. We also have Fairfield Inn, Extended Stay, etc. Temecula is about an hour away from Disneyland, Sea World, SD Zoo, Balboa Park, etc. and about 40 minutes from the Wild Animal Park. Frankly, we Temeculuans head to the beaches in July because it can get toasty here if you don't have access to a pool and shady lounging areas. Again, try vrbo.com to locate either a condo or house that someone is renting out in San Diego or any of the beach areas in OC. As far as kid friendly things to do - depends on what your family likes to do. We have tons of parks, movie theaters, local community pools, there's great bass fishing at Lake Skinner, or the water park at Domengioni Lake. We have a cookie cutter mall, with its usual perks and drawbacks. Upside - there's a very large movie theater and decent restaurants there, downside is that the mall has security cops that really harass the tween/teenage crowd if they are not with their parents. The town of Julian is a nice scenic drive, cute - quaint town, near a lake and a campground. As to going solo - Temecula virtually shuts down at 10-11 at night. It's a family oriented city - so not much of a night life here. Short story - you can spend some quiet time here in Temecula or drive about an hour in either direction and have kid exhausting-all-day-activities, or lounge on the beach with the rest of California. If you decide to go solo - drop me a line and I'll give you all of the best spa locations to go to that are relatively inexpensive (hint - stay away from the wine country spas).

Ok, Meadowlark, looks like it's a girls trip to Temecula. I'm ready to hear about the best spas. Any thoughts?

Hi Longvt,Because it gets a little warm here in July, a lot of the hotels and resorts offer some great deals. Because you are attending a wedding at Falkner Winery, you might want to try South Coast Winery Resort and Spa which is nearby. They are offering July specials and all of their rooms, Villas actually, come with complimentary wine tasting and a bottle of wine in your room. While their spa can be pricey, it is beautiful and well-worth the indulgence! Also, Ontario Airport is the closest to Temecula, however, when travelling I always check San Diego too, because on ocassion, flight schedules and fares are sometimes better; but as far as convenience, definitely Ontario. Good luck!
