Ontario Airport (ONT) is such a more convenient place to go into for a Temecula trip. Costs form the midwest are just a little bit higher, but the convenience greatly makes up for it.
Truthfully, the distance/time between Ontario Airport (ONT) and San Diego (SAN) is about the same without traffic. Another alternative is Orange County (SNA), which is about an hour and fifteen minutes away, without traffic if you take the toll roads (261). If you or your party are arriving during rush hour (between 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., traffic is a nightmare from any of the three, so add on another 1-2 hours to get from the airport down into Temecula. If you are arriving during rush hour, use Ontario, it has the least traffic hassles, but their rental car sites (off-site but has a shuttle) can be a bit of a pain and the rental cars tend to be more expensive in Ontario than either SNA or SAN. The flight in/out of San Diego tend to use larger planes, so they sometimes have better deals and more seats than ONT or SNA.
I live in Temecula and try to fly in and out of Ontario whenever possible. Smaller airport, get bags quicker (usually), straight shot of a drive to Temecula.
The distance from Temecula to SAN/ONT is basicially the same. However, bags seem to take longer at SAN, harder to get to transportation, and greater possibility of traffic along the way.
