Palm Desert to Temecula

We're planning a drive from Palm Desert to Temecula in late February. Are we better to follow the #74 - Pines to Palms into Hemet, then work our way south, or is the #374 through Anza a better choice?

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

We're looking forward to our visit. We're going to squeeze as much golf and wine tasting as possible in two days.

Thanks to GalViolet for her recent posts. Sounds like you guys had a great time.

The 371 to 79 will drop you right into Temecula, more of a direct route.

The 74 thru Hemet will take you more thru the mountains.Depends on what you want to see.The 74 would be more scenic with pine trees, whereas the 379 is lower and goes thru more brush type areas.Lots of stop lights along the 74 in Hemet.

You can bypass the numerous stoplights in Hemet by using another E-W road a few miles south of Hwy 74. Headed west on 74, turn left (south) on State St. Go a few miles and turn right (west) on Domenigoni Pkwy. It was the construction road for the huge reservoir to your left, so it's wide, fast, and has only a few lights. At Hwy 79 turn left (south) which leads to Temecula.

Another excellent route is Hwy 243. From Palm Desert, take I-10 about 20 miles west to Banning. Take 243 south, it quickly climbs through an area ravaged by an arson fire a few years ago. It finally gets into the forest with great views of Mt. San Jacinto. Make sure to stop at the well-marked vista point on the right a few miles before Idyllwild. Hwy 243 ends at Hwy 74, you can turn right and go down the mountain to Hemet, or turn left and go a few miles to Hwy 374.

You are in for some beautiful scenery--I could not get over the roling mountains we rode 'through'--they looked so fake, like something from a movie set.

Thanks to all for your comments and suggestions. We will definitely take the 74 for the mountain scenery, and may even try the deke around Hemet that kenish suggested.

How far is it from the Mountain Centre at the junction of 74 and 283 to Idyllwild, and is there anything worth seeing scenery-wise. I heard there was a nice look-out at Idyllwild.

We're arriving in Temecula around noon on March 1 and are planning to golf at Temecula Creek that afternoon. Can anyone tell me approximately what time it gets dark and can we expect less than a five hour round?
