Spring Break vs Christmas/NY week

We have been to Breck during Spring break a few times and know what the crowds are like. Are Christmas & New Years as busy or even busier? If way too crazy, we also may think of going MLK weekend. How crazy is that weekend? Thank you!!

Spring break --at least for colleges--is from end of Feb to basically first week of April or close to whenever Easter is. Typically that 3rd week of March is the killer for crowds. Christmas at Breck is a zoo as are most of the Summit County front range resorts. Expensive and long queues. Head further west to Aspen, Telluride areas and you'll find it still busy but not Grand Central. MLK also busy but the trick to holiday time is to start early and stay away from the base area.

Check direct flights from Chicago to Montrose to ski at either Telluride or Crested Butte. (or ski both if you have a whole week!) There are also direct flights from Chicago to Aspen/Pitkin County airport.

My experience has been that for Spring Break the crowds are somewhat more spread due to different schools having different times as Texranger alluded to. Families and students often drive in. The southern resorts Telluride, Crested Butte, Durango wlll be overrun with families from Texas and Oklahoma during the Universities spring break. It is a myth that those resorts do not get a high volume of visitors. The tourist maybe more highbrow but there are just as many.

The Summit County resorts will be a their busiest when Nebraska and Kansas are on break. Look at the school schedules posted online to see if it would conflict with your plans. all in all Spring is better due to the maximum terrain open allowing people to spread out more. If you are a high level skiers all the better.

Are there more visitors in Telluride and Crested Butte during spring break than at other times of the year? Yes.

Are these increased numbers of visitors even in the same ballpark when compared to the summit county resorts? Not even in the same league.

No myth at all.

My experience was my experience. Granted that it was a few years ago and maybe they have increased capacity but at the time lift lines were long, I waited as long in a lift line as I have in Breckenridge, getting a table in a restaurant was near impossible, everyplace was at or exceeding the capacity for Telluride.

Calling things a myth is not describing your personal experience. While your experience is certainly your experience, yearly visitor numbers and lift ticket sales at resorts in Southwestern Colorado easily dubunk your "myth" claim. "Highbrow" comment aside, compared to Summit County, Southwestern resorts have a fraction of the visitors and operate at lower capacities.
