Canon City gives you easy access to Colorado Springs if you will have a car. The Springs has a lot of options for things to do, good restaurants, and some nightlife. What type of activities are you looking for? Have you been to Colorado before?

If you can give some specifics on your interests and whether you have a car, we'll be able to give you lots of helpful advice. :-)

Hi,

I'm not spending ANY real time up in the Springs area just down Canon City and some day trips to the surrounding towns to visit family....

Can you suggest a good place for lunch in Colorado Springs? My flight gets in around lunch time and would love to take my cousin out to a GREAT lunch in town before we head south. He's a vegetarian and I'm not so I would need to accomadate his eating habits.

He mentioned hot springs and the Sand Dunes so that's on our list and some hiking in Westcliffe......that's about it. I'm looking for some R&R from my hectic life here in NYC.

Thanks for any suggestions:)

The only fun thing I can think of in Canon City is the Royal Gorge Bridge and train, hope this helps!! When you are in Colorado Springs be sure to visit the Garden of the Gods Park!! I am not familiar with restaurants in the Springs, unfortunately.

You can drive to Salida via a beautiful canyon. Rafting and fishing along the Arkansas River. Another day trip to St Elmo Ghost town near Nathrop (just south of Buena Vista). Hot springs there as well.

Phantom Canyon Road to Cripple Creek (actual gambling there). www.goldbeltbyway.com/phantom-canyon-road

Skyline Drive over the hogbacks (rock hills to the west of Canon City) with a paved road. Great views. geolor.com/Photography/Skyline_Drive_Colorad…

Dinosaur Depot - small dinosaur museum. Also nearby is Garden Park Fossil area and Skyline Dr has some dino tracks www.dinosaurdepot.com/

In the town of Canon City there is a wonderful riverwalk hiking/biking trail. Great in the morning for a quiet hike.

Winery at Holy Cross Abbey www.abbeywinery.com

Restaurants - La Petit Chablis is a wonderful French restaurant, http://www.lepetitchablis.com/ and for pizza - Pizza Madness on Main Street and a local Italian place Merlino's Belvedere (good for the area, but nothing compared to NYC)

In Colorado Springs consider Phantom Canyon Brewing for a casual but good lunch.

If you want a great lunch, you might want to consider heading to the Broadmoor. Another option if you fly in on a weekday would be Bluestar. Both are some of the best the Springs has to offer.

Another option in Canon City might be the Royal Gorge Route Railway. A lovely train trip that takes about two hours - they do lunch and dinner trains, wine trains, etc....

If you're in the Canon City area, I would also suggest a tour of the Winery at Holy Cross Abbey in addition to the Park and train. There is also a ton of whitewater rafting if anyone is interested.

When you visit the Great Sand Dunes, you might consider Joyful Journey Hot Springs & Spa if you want to make it an overnight stay, & to include hot springs.

Thanks-

Skyline Drive was scary, since I have a bit of vertigo..... but I did it since it was part of my cousins itinerary for when I visited.....

Phantom Canyon Road to Cripple Creek was the BEST- I thought Cripple Creek was a little sad since all it is are Casinos- not my thing but glad I got to see it.

Red Canyon, hiked in Eco Park along Grape Creek, and Tunnel Drive in Canon City was also great.....

River Walk along the Arkansas terrific since I stayed at the Parkview Motel- which was directly across the street(route 50)- a great value!!

Pizza Madness was good as were most of the restaurants I ate at.

The Best meal was at MoMo's- the worst was at Merlino's(what a rip off!).

All in all I had a terrific visit out west to Canon City, Westcliffe and the surrounding towns.....thanks to all for all the great suggestions

Thanks for taking the time to post about how your trip turned out. Since these forum threads tend to get lost after a while, it would be most helpful if you would post reviews of some of the things you did and places you ate--especially the great meal you had at MoMo's and the disappointment of Merlino's.
