Colorado Springs, winter, toddlers.

We’re coming on 01/10-16 with our two boys- 3yrs and 19 months old. Staying at Great Wolf Lodge, but wanting to get out and do other things. Zoo was at the top of our list, but concerned that the weather will make it too cold to enjoy, and keep animals from being active? Thoughts? Also, suggestions for things to do around there with that age group? Restaurant recommendations, neat shops, just general ideas for what to do, Thanks!

The zoo is absolutely wonderful in the winter, and generally the animals are busy. We love to go after a fresh snow fall to see them playing in the snow. The zoo has many indoor exhibits, so as long as the weather isn't too cold you can put the zoo on your agenda.

Focus on the Family has a nice indoor play area up on the north side where you will be staying. If the weather is good you may also enjoy a visit to the Broadmoor to walk around the lake. The scenery is beautiful, and they have a little playground as well.

Another outdoor option is Santa's North Pole - a Christmas themed amusement park specifically desinged for little kids. It will be colder than Texas in January, for sure, but winter in Colorado is suprisingly mild. The highs will be in the upper 40s/lower 50s when you are here, so just wear layers and have a hat and gloves and you will be fine.

There is a lot of sunshine in the winter so 40 degress in the dry sunny Colorado feels a lot warmer than 40 degress in a humid cloudy area.

Agree with Law_Girl that the zoo is a good stop in the winter too and it will not be too cold to prevent the animals from being active.

For shopping and restaurants you can visit:

Downtown along Tejon Street

Old Colorado City along Colorado Ave

Manitou Springs on Manitou Ave

(Penny Arcade is always fun)

Fargos Pizza is a popular place for kids

Also The Shops at Briargate is up north, with a good selection of restaurants

Add Garden of the Gods to your list of things to do. It's stroller friendly and the visitor's center is a must.

Cave of the Winds will be open, even if you don't do a tour, the views up there are pretty cool of the gorge below.

If your 3 yr old likes dinasoars, Woodland Park and Royal Gorge have a nice Rocky Mt. Dinosaur Resource Center

Santa's Workshop, mentioned earlier, gets my vote for toddlers. I went there as a child myself about 50 years ago! Lol
