Any black bear issues in 2013?

We camped at Oh Be Joyful in 2009 and had a black bear get into the tent at the next campsite (luckily the owner was not present.) It seemed like the campsite was being used as a residence with food being stored in the tent. We're considering a trip next summer, but would like to know in advance if that campground is still having bear "issues." How about in the backcountry around Crested Butte - we'd like to spend a few days backpacking, too. Have there been problems reported in 2013?

What you described sounds more like a human issue than a black bear issue. Very disheartening for anyone that cares about bear safety to hear that fellow campers are failing to take even the most basic precautions and endangering people and bears.

I hike, bike, and camp all around the Crested Butte area and the last time I saw a bear (in the valley) was in Aug. 2012 up near Green Lake. Otherwise, bears are not something an experienced camper/backpacker should be concerned about.

We've never camped at Oh Be Joyful so can't help you there, but we're retired & hiked/biked almost every day all over in the CB area this spring & summer, never seeing a bear.

Lots of deer, big horn sheep, huge herds of elk but have yet to see a bear here.

Sadly, as they say, a fed bear is a dead bear and shame on those campers.
