Trip in Sept

Hi all

I am going to visit Denver in September, I plan on going up to Mount Rushmore, across to Yellowstone and finishing in SLC. So, there have been a few people who gave me some tips in the area but are there any places I definately shouldnt miss in these areas on my roadtrip?

Thanks

In South Dakota, also consider checking out more in the Black Hills than just Mount Rushmore. Custer State Park is great with the Bison walking around. sdgfp.info/Parks/Regions/Custer/custersp.htm. Badlands National Park is a nice drive through also http://www.nps.gov/badl/index.htm. Visiting Deadwood is nice also.

Dont' forget Devil's Tower in Wyoming http://www.nps.gov/DETO/index.htm. A scenic route from South Dakota to Devils Tower is to catch South Dakota hwy 34 to Wyoming, where it turns into Wyoming state hwy 24, which goes the 'back way' to Devils tower along the Belle Fourche River. It is much more scenic than the Interstate 90.

Going to Yellowstone from the east, you can either go through Billings, MT or the Big Horn Mountains.

If you go through the Big Horn Mountains, then you enter Yellowstone Park via Cody Wyoming. Sheridan,Wyoming is a nice place to stay, as you can travel over the Big Horn Mountains on the way to Cody, Wyoming. http://www.sheridanwyoming.org/

Sheridan is also close to Little Big Horn National Battlefield http://www.nps.gov/libi/

If you go through Billings, you can enter Yellowstone Park through the Bearthooth Highway, IMHO, the most scenic paved mountain road in the Rocky Mountains. byways.org/explore/byways/2281/services.html

West of Yellowstone Park is another place I think is worth visiting in the area: Lewis and Clark Caverns. It is a Montana State Park. http://fwp.mt.gov/lands/site_281895.aspx

To get to SLC from western Wyoming (Yellowstone) I suggest going from Kemmerer WY to Bear Lake where one can get a raspberry malt at one of the roadside hamburger joints, then down the very beautiful Logan Canyon to the town of Logan where we always stay at the Baugh Motel. Highly recommended. Thence to Salt Lake City. September is a perfect month to visit.

should you decide to fly in and out of Denver, I want to recommend taking a couple of days in Estes Park for the Rocky Mtn Natl park. Elk will be in rut and Trail Ridge Rd (a must do!) should still be open.

We did this trip driving from Ohio last Sept. Badlands, Rushmore, Devils Tower, Cody, Yellowstone, Tetons, Estes Park and then home. Took 16 days and put over 5000 miles on the rental car :) It was great fun!

Don't miss Custer State Park in the Rushmore area if no one has mentioned it. My favorite place in the area.
