Vehicle rental in Boulder or Denver

We are planning on visiting in May next year and were planning on renting a vehicle from http://www.escapecampervans.com/ in LA and doing a trip through the Southwest. However, I am worried that I will get a bit sick of desert so we are considering getting there from Boulder (we are going there anyway) instead as it is about the same distance but we will see more trees on the way. And I like trees :-) Unfortunately I can't rent anything like this in Colorado so my next option is to get a vehicle, take a tent and go car camping (to keep the trip affordable and allow us to stay in the areas we want to). If I could, I would like a vehicle with a towball so we can put a bike rack on it. I have looked at http://www.adventurecamper.com/index.html but I don't need a vehicle that flash (but would need one big enough to put all our camping gear in - we are a family of four). Does anyone know of any other places that rent vehicles with towballs? We are planning on travelling for a month.

I've looked before for camper van type rentals in the Denver area and could not find any either. I would get the vehicle you desire in LA, because you need to be comfortable and happy in your trip.

The southwest part of the USA is not entirely desert and does have some forests to view at higher elevations. Because of the variety of elevations in the southwest, each elevation has a different ecology. …arizona.edu/backyards/…p7-8.pdf

Here is a link of forest distribution in the USA . fs.fed.us/pnw/…17color.pdf

Northern Arizona along the Mogollon Rim has a fabulous forest fs.fed.us/r3/…rec_mogollon.shtml

The North Rim of the Grand Canyon and the Kaibab Plateau also has a nice forest, as it is about 1,000 ft/300 m higher in elevation than the south rim http://northrim.grandcanyon.com/

Of course when you get to north-central New Mexico and central Colorado, there are lots of trees at elevation, but the lower elevations in western Colorado are desert also.

You may not like the look of Colorado's rapidly developing brown forests.

Some of the vistas from I-70 betw Denver and the western slope are pretty sad.

Unfortunately the Pine Bark Beetle is affecting most of western North America. Here are some of Pine Bark Beetle references.

Thanks for your replies. We appreciate the time and effort put in to them.

If we start in LA our route will be: LA - Joshua Tree - Las Vegas - Zion - Bryce - Capitol Reef - Goblin Forest - Moab (Arches and Canyonland) - Durango - Mesa Verde - Valley of the Gods - Monument Valley - Page - North Rim GC - Las Vegas - Calico Ghost Town - Sequioa/Kings - Yosemite - San Francisco, then fly to Denver and look at Rocky Mountain NP (and visit friends).

If we change our plans we will go: LA - Sequioa/Kings - Yosemite, fly to Denver, Denver - Breckenridge - Aspen - Telluride - Durango (steam train) -

- Mesa Verde - Valley of the Gods - Monument Valley - Page - North Rim GC - Zion - Bryce - Capitol Reef - Goblin Forest - Moab (Arches and Canyonland) - Denver

In total, both trips will be about 45 days.

Southern Utah also has some fine forests http://www.fs.fed.us/r4/

There is the Fishlake National Forest, Dixie National Forest, and by Moab is the LaSalle National Forest http://www.fs.fed.us/r4/about/utah.shtml

Also keep in mind that during May it can still snow in the higher elevations. for instance, I'm not sure when in May the North Rim of Grand Canyon NP opens.

Other Trip Advisor forums you could post in would be the 'Road Trip Forum' and the forums for the respective areas you plan to visit.
