Off airport car rentals

We are flying in to Denver and need to rent a car for 10 days. Car rental rates at the airport are pretty high because of the added airport taxes/fees that are tacked on to the rental cost. I would like to find a rental car location off airport property where I could get a lower rate. Any suggestions? Also, what should I expect to pay for taxi from the airport to that location?

Thanks for your advice/input.

Check out Avis. They've got a location at DoubleTree Hotel not far from airport. I believe they run shuttle from DEN to their place. Will save you $$$ and you can return rental to airport at no extra charge.

Yep the Doubletree has a free shuttle as does most of the hotels along Quebec street. Avis has a counter at one of them (cannot remember which) and an Enterprise Counter at the Red Lion.

If you're planning on staying in downtown Denver for a day or two, you might want to consider waiting until you're ready to leave Denver to pick-up the car downtown. Rates downtown are lower and you'll avoid paying for hotel parking, which can run upwards of $20/night. Also no sense of paying for a car during days when you won't really need it. You'll need to take a taxi , shuttle, or public bus to downtown from the airport so run the numbers to see what works out to be the most economical.
