Where to stay and what to do over a weekend in Denver

I'm visiting Denver on business (well Westminster) in a weeks time. Due to flights, myself and a colleague will finish work on the Friday but now fly back until Monday night.

Can anyone suggest where would be a good place to stay in Denver along with some ideas as to what we can get up to?

Keen on somewhere central near some decent bars/restaurants/clubs for the evening. Also would like to see some of the sights as well as do some shopping!

Thanks in advance.

Stay near Lodo or 16th Street in Downtown Denver. Close to sports arenas, bars, restaurants, museums etc. Plenty to do including Denver Art Museum, Coors Field tours, shows, concerts and even more if you take local transportation to zoo, Museum of Science and Nature.

Definitely stay in Downtown Denver near Lodo. Some good (though expensive) hotels in the area are:

If these are too expensive for you, take a look at their location on a map anyways - that's the general area where you want to stay. Denver's 16th Street Mall has a free shuttle bus that stops at every street corner along the mall every 5min or so. This will be helpful in getting around.

Also, 16th Street Mall will provide shopping for you, as well as a number of places to eat. The Cherry Creek North Shops are also within a short driving/cab ride distance from the city center if you are looking for more upscale shopping opportunities.

Some daytime sights to see, in walking or short driving distance, would be the giant blue bear at the Colorado Convention center, the Denver Art Museum & Denver Public Library Buildings and the public art surrounding them (of course the Art Museum itself is good too, but takes a lot of time to see), City Park, the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, or the Denver Zoo. At night, make sure to stop by the Millenium Bridge in Riverfront Park (at the west end of the free 16th street mall shuttle) to see a good view of the nighttime skyline.

As for some restaurant/bar/club recommendations for the evening, try the Wyncoop Brewery or Old Spaghetti Factory for dinner. The Tavern, Lodo's Bar and Grill, and The Front Porch are some good local bars. Larimer Square hosts higher end lounges and cocktail places. Suite Two Hundred, Beta, Club Vinyl, and the Church are some local Denver club favorites, though check on the music selection the night you are planning to go. Other popular places downtown include 1Up (an arcade bar), Lavish (club), The Corner Office (cocktails across from the Denver Center for Performing Arts), and Mynt Lounge among others. Keep in mind, Denver's nightlife scene is busiest on the weekends in the winter - the cold can keep us Coloradans from wanting to go out on a worknight.

Bonefish Grill in Westminster is a chain but excellent. There is a long bar and in the lounge there are three long large tables at which anyone can sit. Also several booths in that lounge area. Great atmosphere in there. The dining room is separated. We like the bar area. Have been a patron for many years and many locations. Went with a non-fish eater last week and she loved the steak and there were non-fish appetizers we all loved. Fish/seafood is excellent and well prepared, they will gladly customize for you ( we subbed one type of fish for another and it was great). Omni is in that area and quite nice. Butterfly Garden is awesome, a tropical delight, see if there is a special event there while you are in town-it's NOT just for kids!

I agree to spend your weekend downtown.

I've stayed at the Sheraton and it was very comfortable and clean. Other family members have stayed at the Comfort Inn. The hotels I often see recommended are the Monaco and the Curtis.

If you are book lovers, some of your shopping/coffee/browsing time should be at The Tattered Cover Bookstore.

Denver.org is a great resource for things to do, and you can often find hotel specials and coupons for attractions, restaurants, etc.

The National Western Stock Show is Jan 7-22, so that would be another activity to consider.
