Visiting in April

Hello, I'm planning a 4 day trip to Denver in mid-April and would love recommendations for things to see and do both in the city and scenic places within a 2 hour drive. I've looked through the "Things to do" list here for Denver, but didn't see much there in terms of day trips. Can anyone tell me when Mt. Evans Scenic Byway typically opens? Also, I was in denver several years ago and went to an "old west" town nearby, but can not remember the name of the town.

Any other tips or recommendations would be appreciated.

The road to the summit of Mt. Evans is typically opened by Memorial Day. It depends on snow amounts though. Usually the road to Summit Lake is opened before the last 5 miles to the summit.

It depends on the weather, but Guenella Pass could be a nice visit.

Old western town - Idaho springs or golden?

Visit boulder for a day! And the hikes around there should be perfect that time of the year (and pearl st is really pretty)

Can we make some food recs? ;-)

www.denver.org has an event calendar, articles, things to do and lists of day trips, itineraries, museums, tours. etc. You might also use the search feature on the forum.

The Peak to Peak Scenic Byway to Estes Park and a visit to Rocky Mountain National Park can be done as a day trip. On the Rocky Mountain Natl Park forum page, look to the right side for a Top Question about a winter day trip. Much of that information will be useful for a spring day trip, as well, because mid-April is likely to still be wintry at the higher elevations.

Central City is another of the historic towns near Denver. It now has limited stakes gambling.

From the forest service site for Mount Evans Recreation Area:

Alerts and Notices

The Mount Evans road is closed for the 2013 season. The road is scheduled to reopen on Friday, May 23, 2014, weather permitting.

The top five mile section of road to the Summit of Mount Evans Interpretive Site is scheduled to be closed for the season on Tuesday, September 2, 2014, at Summit Lake.

The lower section of the road will remain open until Monday, October 6, 2014, depending on weather conditions.

Open Season

The Mount Evans Road and Scenic Byway (Colorado Highway 5) is open the Friday of Memorial Day weekend through the first weekend in October, depending on weather conditions. The road and access to the top of Mount Evans is closed at Summit Lake the day after Labor Day.

For the latest information about the road visit http://www.coloradodot.info/

From I-70: Take exit 240 in Idaho Springs. Follow Highway 103 south until it meets Echo Lake. Take Highway 5 to the top of Mount Evans.

From Bergen Park: Take Squaw Pass Road/Highway 103 west and travel to Echo Lake. Take Highway 5 to the top of Mount Evans

The part of the Mount Evans Scenic Byway from Bergen Park to Echo Lake and from Echo Lake to Idaho Springs is open year round.

From the forest service site regarding Guanella Pass:

As scheduled in the past, the Clear Creek County will close Guanella Pass Road at the Naylor Lake intersection and approximately 0.8 mile north of the Park/Clear Creek County line on December 2, 2013. To provide winter maintenance on the Guanella Pass Road is very costly for Clear Creek County and requires unavailable resources. Clear Creek County will maintain Guanella Pass Road on a first day service to Cabin Creek Hydroelectric Plant and then on a third/fourth day basis to the Naylor Lake intersection after a snowfall. It is Clear Creek County's hope the Guanella Pass Road will reopen in its entirety by Friday, May 23, 2014. Should you have questions or concerns, please contact our office: 303-679-2312, or check the Guanella Pass Road Information Line at 303-679-2422 x.2 for updates. Thank you.

I second Rocky Mountain National Park. Take the Peak to Peak to Estes Park. Return by way of highway 7 from Estes Park to Lyons through very colorful South St. Vrain Canyon and then back through Boulder. Here is a google maps link for a winter/spring driving tour of RMNP.

Within 2 hours you can visit Summit County (Dillon, Silverthorne, Breckenridge, Frisco) even if you don't want to ski. Beautiful mountain views, shopping and dining options. Also Rocky Mtn Nat Park and Colorado Springs (Garden of the Gods, Manitou Springs, Colorado City, Airforce Acad, Pikes Peak)

There is plenty to do in Denver for 4 days, and do consider visiting one of the many museums, some local restaurants and even the zoo. Possibly baseball will have started and hockey will still be going!
