Driving or Train

I was going to drive on Rt. 550 from Durango to Silverton. I don't have alot of time and I can't envision sitting for 3 1/2 hours each way on the train. Will I be missing a lot or is the scenery similar?

Thank you.

If you are into ruins.. a'la Mesa Verde etc. and are near Monument Valley, consider a Navajo escorted trip into Betakin and/or Keet Seel.

Monument Valley ... beautiful

Mesa Verde.. beautiful, inspiring,

Durango Silverton narrow guage trip ( bus back) fantastic 3 hours train trip with fantastic views. engineering marvel built 100 + years ago

Hello, I'm "reviving" this older thread to ask for assistance. I'm thinking about going with a train and 4x4 jeep tour that the Durango Silverton RR offers and haven't seen any reviews for it. I was wondering if anyone had done this combo or would have any insight into it? Much appreciated.

Blaire P, I always recommend the train/jeep combo tour that includes Animas Forks ghost town. I have not taken the combo tour, but I have ridden the train and we have driven our own 4 wheel drive vehicle in the area. I think the train/jeep (or train/ATV) combo is one of the best ways to make the most of your time, because in about the same amount of time as taking the round trip on the train, you can also get in a jeep tour! Many people think that one way on the train is enough, anyway. Lots of people would like to spend more time in the mountains, see more mountain scenery or old mines, and/or see a ghost town but their rental car agreement prohibits driving off-pavement. The combination tour is the best solution, IMO.

In doing some research recently, I see that San Juan BackCountry also has some additional options for time in Silverton. http://sanjuanbackcountry.com/index.html

MisspWestSlop, thank you so much for the information. This was exactly what I was looking for. It looks like the jeep/train combo is a great way to go. Thanks again!
