Is it a good idea to drive from Moab to Mesa Verde, tour the park, and drive back to Moab in the same day in the first week of October?

Definitely do-able but not sure it's the greatest idea. Daylight is short then so you would need an early start. But for sure it's possible and you would be able to take away something from the visit.

Have fun.

Isn't it still day light savings then?

I would say doable but not comfortable. You will need at least 5-6 hours inside the park and the drive from Moab into the park (not the entrance) will be at least 3 hours. Hiking in the higher elevations, sun and dry air will tire you out more than you realize. Sunset is around 7pm that time of year.

Yes, it's still daylight saving time. Think it will be a very rushed day. Stay overnight if you can. Far View Lodge is a great place.

I think you'll love viewing Mesa Verde at night. The stars at night are phenomenal

. My husband is addicted to this place.... Truth be told I am too.

Definitely stay the night if you can. Also consider taking the scenic route back to Moab via Dolores, Rico, Telluride, and then west toward Norwood and back into Utah. The first week of October should still get you some fall color in the mountains!
