Help with rafting trip

Should a family (in mid-july) white water rafting around Ouray, Durango or Moab? Want a bit of an exciting trip but not a "deliverance" type of experience. 1/2 day is probably the best. I am not sure about what levels either. Thanks

It depends on the age of your kids as well.

In Moab there is the Moab Daily and Westwater - I am not even sure if you could find an available spot for the Westwater run - it has limited launches. The Daily is basically a float trip - lovely mesa and tower scenery though. Personally, I would go with the Durango area. Maybe consider the Gunny Gorge on the Gunnison River in the Montrose area.

Hopefully a local will respond as well, but if not find a local outfitter via the web link below and see what they suggest.

Mid-July will be hot in desert Utah (Moab, Westwater). Maybe even hotter than Dallas (but much prettier :-).

Good advice to stick to Durango or Gunny gorge.

I agree with the hotter than Dallas comment - gosh - who wants to be hotter.

I had not heard about the gunny thing. Comments around pros/cons of Gunny trip versus durango trip?

Thanks everyone.

I haven't rafted in Durango or Gunnison. But the Moab Daily raft float is a family favorite of ours. You can do full day or 1/2 day and there are lots of outfitters to choose from. The hot, dry weather makes floating down the CO river in a life jacket next to the raft that much more fun. And the water gun fights too!! Beautiful raft trip with just a few fun easy rapids.

How old are the kids?

July can vary. You can look at http://www.mild2wild.com near Durango or http://www.fishrigs.com near Ouray

Near Ouray, you will find a mild trip and Durango could be more adventuresome. I have never rafted in Moab but I agree, July is too hot there.

Here are some links with info on Gunnison River trips and one outfitter that offers Uncompahgre trips.

Thanks for the help. My children are all late teens, athletic and excellent swimmers. The parents are the laggers in the group :)
