Ouray or Ridgway rental

We are traveling to this area the week of July 4th. Considering the week we are going, our budget, and the fact that we are bringing a dog, our rental options are limited. We found a place in Ridgway, despite the original intent to stay in Ouray. However, we are worried that Ridgway is a bit far from things we want to do... Jeep tours, water rafting, hiking, etc. also, we want a picturesque place, and while our cabin rental looks to be in a pretty location, I've heard Ridgway is quite flat, and treeless. Comments? Suggestions? Thanks!

Ridgway is not "flat and treeless". It is in the foothills, not mountains and is more arrid than Ouray and Telluride. It is not as scenic as the other two, but is not without views. Ouray is only 10-15 minutes away and Telluride is about 40 minutes away. If the price is right, go for it.

Ditto on Ridgway. It is beautiful, and there are also a number of outstanding hiking trails close by (Blue Lakes trail comes to mind -- one of our absolute favorites). It's conveniently located, as endosunshire said.

Funny you should describe Ridgway that way - Ralph Lauren has an awesome ranch just outside the town and is where his daughter was married. Dallas Divide is a remarkable landscape just to the west of town and one of the most photographed in the fall - gorgeous year round. Go to the east and you will find Owl Creek Pass, also stunning. John Wayne made True Grit here so it's got some famous moments on film.

You can have a great time there, the town is a nice place and convenient to both Ouray and Telluride.

The vacation rentals right around Ridgway may be in the pinon/juniper/sagebrush and will likely have beautiful mountain views. But if you envision a cabin in a forest of tall pines, you might be disappointed. I agree with the previous posts that if the vacation rental is well priced and suits your family, go for it! It would be nice to be right in Ouray so that you could just walk to the 4th of July festivities, but lodging that suits your family may be hard to come by and I think you'll be fine in or near Ridgway. If you're planning on going to the parade in Ouray on the 4th, just get to town early and scout out a parking place, then don't plan to leave town until well after the parade is over.

A "cabin in Rigdway" could mean quite a few things. All are good -- but there could be a big difference depending on exactly where it is. Do you have an address or street? Or even a vague description like "2 miles west of Ridgway" which would probably be a better location than "1 mile north of Ridgway" Maybe we could assure you even more if we knew a little more.
