day trips to Santa Fe and Ouray from Pagosa Springs

We are spending a week at Wyndham Pagosa Springs. Considering going to Santa Fe for a day trip - have a teenager who is an artist and needs to see the Georgia O'Keefe museum. How long does it take to get there and any recommendations for what else to see? Also have an 8 year old. Another priority is to go on a jeep trip to Yankee Boy Basin in Ouray. Lots of jeep outfits to choose from. Any recommendations? Is the Great Sand Dunes Ntl Park worth it? Maybe too hot for July? Definitely will do Mesa Verde. Have never posted anything in a forum. Would appreciate any feedback. We are heading there tomorrow.

Welcome to Pagosa - tomorrow!

Santa Fe is an easy 3 hour drive from Pagosa Springs on hwy 84. You will pass through Abiquiu, NM (2 hours south of Pagosa) - which is where Georgia O'Keefe lived. There are additional tours there. Also, Ghost Ranch is along the route too - another location Georgia O'Keefe lived. It's a great drive. Also, plan to stop in Chama (hour south of Pagosa) and explore the Cumbres & Toltec train station.

Just so that you know, the drive times of the other places you mentioned (each way):

Ouray: 3 hours

Mesa Verde: 2 hours

Sand Dunes: 2.5 hours

The Sand Dunes are great. However, a small portion of the park is closed due to a recent fire, which is now mostly contained. Check out http://www.nps.gov/grsa/parknews/index.htm for updates.

The weather next week is going to be warm - expect low to mid-90s at Mesa Verde and Sand Dunes.

Also consider floating the San Juan River while in Pagosa - it flows through downtown. Pagosa Outside offers tube rentals and a shuttle. Fun day for the whole family.

Enjoy your week in the Pagosa area!

Thanks for the quick reply. All good advice. Driving times are a bit longer than I had originally thought. Good for planning. May see the sand dunes another time. Sounds like tubing through downtown is just the ticket in the heat! Really appreciate the tips!

Get an early start to Santa Fe. The museum is open from 10am to 5pm Su- We and until 8pm Th-Sa. Plan on a lunch before you see the musuem...nearby places good for kids are Tia Sophia's www.santafelunch.com/133/Tia_Sophia%27s/ Burt's Burger Bowl, Bumblebee's, Blake's Lotaburger,

A visit to the Plaza area and shopping under the Palace of the Governors Portal. The 8 year old may like the NM History Museum and a shopping trip to the 5 & Dime (used to be much bigger as a Woolworth's) http://www.fiveanddimegs.com/ . Maybe try a frito pie!!

Here's previous discussions on jeep tours in Ouray.

The Yankee Boy Basin tour will be a half day tour. Coming from Pagosa Springs, you'd have to take one of the afternoon tours, leaving at 1 or 1:30. After the tour, you'd have that 3 hour drive back to Pagosa. :( You'll have to decide if your tour just has to be Yankee Boy, or if a tour from Durango or maybe Pagosa Springs would do. For me, it would just have to be Yankee Boy if I could only do one, but others might disagree, lol!

A drive to Creede would be a great day trip, as would a visit to Durango. Your kids would love the Alpine Slide and other activites at Purgatory Village such as the climbing wall and bungee tramp. There are free naturalist-guded hikes as well.

If you take the road from Chama to Taos as suggested earlier you'll cross the Rio Grande Gorge just before you get there. wow.

You must go to Taos. Give it as much time as you can; it is so unique and amazing. And you'll love the drive there through New Mexico's beautiful Sangre de Cristo Mountains, with hwy 68 following the Rio Grande down to Espaniola and Santa Fe.

Thanks for the tip. I am going to re-route our return trip to include Taos and some of the scenic by ways. Good idea and I wouldn't have wanted to miss it.

Enjoyed our trip to Santa Fe! Thanks for the tip about Bumblebee's. We ate there before we started walking. It was a nice cultural and culinary experience for us. Watermelon juice? Who would have thought? I highly recommend the squash and goat cheese quesadilla! Our highlight was shopping under the Palace of the Governor's Portal from the Native Americans. The jewelry was very good quality. We were able to pick up a few gifts and really enjoyed talking with the artisans. The 5 & Dime was a big hit with the kids and a nice respite from the crowds. Also, the ice cream was considerably cheaper than the Hagen Daz next door! We took a different route via Taos on our return back to Pagosa. The Rio Grande Gorge bridge is not to be missed. It was truly heart stopping! We got there at sunset and could not believe our eyes! It is not for the faint of heart. Thanks to everyone for the tips! The ride from Pagosa to Santa Fe was gorgeous. I had to keep pulling off the road to take pictures. The landscape was so varied with surprises around every corner. The area around Ghost Ranch was breathtaking. What a great day!
