Travel from Fort Colins to Steamboat Springs

I need to begin planning our trip to Steamboat Springs from Fort Collins in 2013, even though it is only September 2012.

I want to know how long in hours it would take

and how many miles it would be?

It's through the Rocky Mountains, right?

Thank you

No, the shortest route to Steamboat Springs from Fort Collins is not through Rocky Mountain National Park--if that is what you mean by through the Rocky Mountains. The shortest route is by way of highway 14 most of which is the Cache La Poudre Scenic Byway. This is the mapquest link for that route and the mileage and time estimates are correct. Have a full tank of gas. Much of this route is through rather undeveloped land. You do travel over two mountain passes, Cameron and Rabbit Ears.

If you want to travel through Rocky Mountain National Park, here is the link for that route.

This route travels up very dramatic Big Thompson Canyon and then over Trail Ridge Road--considered by many the crown jewel of RMNP. Many people take most of a day to drive and explore the many overlooks and short trails along Trail Ridge Road. It is an amazing road with tremendous views and great opportunities to view wildlife. If your trip is in late September, weather can be a factor. TRR was closed due to snow and inclimate weather 2 days this week. To just drive this route, the time estimate given by mapquest is about right depending on traffic.
