Driving Conditions in Telluride in mid-October

Take a road trip from Phoenix to Telluride in mid October. Curious about driving conditions along this route, and in town. I have a choice of a rear-wheel drive sedan (comfortable road trip car), or small front-wheel drive SUV (not as comfortable).

Concerned about traction issues with the rear-wheel drive. Can I get away with it at this time of year, or is it likely I'm going to hit some light snow where the SUV is safer?

You can never tell when there might be some snow at higher elevations. However, in Oct it does not last long and would most likely be a very small amount. I say take the comfortable car.

Do not expect snowy roads anywhere in the valleys.
