New Haven during Yale commencement

Hello! I'm going to be in Hamden on May 19 for a friend's wedding. I was considering sightseeing in New Haven on the 20th, until I saw that Yale's commencement ceremonies would be held that entire weekend. Would it just be an exercise in futility to try to travel by car into New Haven that day? Thank you for any advice!

No doubt it will be a zoo but if you really want to vist get into town early, park in one of the garages and leave your car for the day. Or check out the CT Transit bus schedule from Hamden.

Thanks for confirming with me! I think we're just going to skip sightseeing this time around.

New haven is a large city and there are always things to do.....the Yale graduation will not take up the whole city.

If you have never been to an IKEA--take a visit to the one in new Haven....it is the funnist place where you can eat good food on the cheap and just walk around for excercise .

There are also two or three playhouses and musical reviews --The Yale has its own Hall the Shubert which is located downtown ---and near IKEA is another playhouse The Long Wharf. both offer full schedules of music or plays.

The two casinos are about a hour away from new haven...cheap buses can be gotten at the railway station downtown for about $25-$30 for a day or a night trip. These two casinos have MANY names and Branded Restaurants and pools and musical venues.

Downtown New Haven has several very nice and $$$ dinner locations near by to the green and also lesser $$ all over downtown. Some nice cool shops as well for gettin some small gifts.

West Haven--has some nice Fish Houses . If your into fish especially fried or Prime Rib ( on the weekends only ) try Jimmies of Savin Rock....but around the Branford area there are several others--more higher end sort of places but good none the less.......Also are some old fashion fish joints called "Fish Tales" $ .

You can also take the train from New Haven to New York or New Haven to Rhode Island or simply drive to Rhode Island and do and see a whole nother options of things.

You can also take the Ferry and your car to Long Island for the day from B ridgeport...or go to Marthas Vineyard from Rhode Island.

Lots of things to do.........have fun !!!!!
