Saturday Trip to Stamford

My family and I will be in NYC for our daughter's college graduation in early May. I found out a few years ago that I am a direct descendent of a woman from Stamford who was tried for witchcraft in the 1600's. We would like to visit Stamford on a Saturday to get a flavor of the area during colonial times. I understand there is still at least one house (Hoyt Barnum) from those times that we might visit. Any other ideas for places to visit?

If you are seeking historical sites, and have a car - I would recommend Putnam House in Greenwich -

The Hoyt Barnum house is run by the Stamford Historical Society. It is only open by appointment, so you might want to check out their website in advance. Unfortunately, Stamford does not retain much colonial flavor. There must be a few other isolated homes that date back a couple of hundred years, but I don't know off hand. The Historical Society might be able to help.

The best place to get a flavor of colonial times is up the line in Fairfield. There is a section of the downtown area that is quite well preserved. Someone mentioned Putnam Cottage in Greenwich. That is owned by the DAR and open only on Sunday afternoons. Also in Greenwich is the Bush-Holley House, headquarters of the Greenwich Historical Society, also with limited hours - Wednesday to Sunday in the afternoon.
