Decent hotels near Mohegan Sun

I am new to the Trip Advisor Forums, so bear with me. My sister and her husband are visiting from Florida in a few weeks, and we wanted to visit Mohegan Sun, since we have never been there. I already got tickets to one of the shows for July 2. We thought of taking the scenic route via Westerly, RI(not really out of our way). Problem is: with it being 4th of July weekend, I am not finding hotels online that look too promising. How far away are Mystic, and Norwich/New London?? I don't want to be driving too far (more than 15-20 min). at nite. Any suggestions?? Appreciate it.

Norwich is pretty close to Mohegan Sun and would be a good choice. Some hotels in Norwich to try would be Ramada Inn, Rosemont Suites or The Spa at Norwich Inn (pricey, but really nice!).

New London is a bit farther - but still a reasonable drive. Take a look at the Holiday Inn New London, Lighthouse Inn Resort, Queen Ann Inn and the Radisson Hotel New London.

Just beyond New London is Groton - which I would ty before Mystic. In Groton, check out Best Western Olympic Inn, Clarion Inn, Hampton Inn or the Mystic Marriott Hotel & Spa.

Good Luck and I hope you have a great time!

Many of the hotels in Mystic run shuttles to the casino, so you could easily stay there and not worry about driving.

Norwich is very close; no matter where you stayed there, you wouldn't be more than 15 minutes or so. But it's an old mill town, and if you're looking for esthetically pleasing surroundings, you won't find much. (OK, Norwich people, I know there are nice sections, but most of the hotels aren't situated there.) The Norwich Spa is the exception, but you'll pay.

Well, this is probably too late, but the Mystic Marriot Hotel and Spa is beautiful!

Anyone else have any suggestions?? Looking into a road trip and can't bear to spend money on a room at mohegan. I'll donate enough while gambling :)

I know this is a late post but someone may find it helpful. Best Western has a couple of places close to Mohegan Sun that we have used. The Cristata Inn in Uncasville is best. They have a limo shuttle to the casino less than a mile away. The breakfast is good, the spacious rooms and pool clean, and the rates are excellent. We just returned from Olympic Inn in Groton. Again, there is a van shuttle although it is more limited in it's schedule and you have to sign up in advance. They give you a few bucks of funny money to use at the very good Flanigan's restaurant on premises in lieu of a continental breakfast. Olympic has more standard size rooms and it seems like an older place. Cristata is best but Olympic will do in a pinch. If you're visiting the area, don't forget to see Misquamicut beach, nice waves and the state beach has free parking usually after 3pm or so.

I have since stayed at the Best Western in Mystic as well. It was a good stay. I would say it ranks somewhere between the Cristata and the Olympic. The best thing is it's convenient drive to Misquamicut which is a big part of our visits to the area. The Ground Round restaurant on the premises is convenient; the pool was good; the exercise room was the best I've seen in a while and I think the desk staff is the best as well.

I have stayed at Groton at the super8 there and fully recommend it. If i dont get comped rooms at mohegan, that's usually my next destination.
