beach availability

As a first-time visitor, where can I find decent public beach in the Bethany area, near Holiday Inn Ex?

All of the beaches in Bethany are public. Just head east.

It is only a block or two to the Ocean. Sea Colony is between the HI Express and the Ocean, so you will need to go around it to the left (north).

Never stayed there, but it is well located. The best part is that it east of Route 1 so you do not have to worry about crossing a major highway to get to the beach.

Careful about public versus private beaches. Delaware policies on public access are guided by high tide versus low tide. The best description I have found is on the surfrider org site. The describe the policy, and they have this specific guidance:

"Beach access is difficult and contentious at several locations in the Bethany Beach area. Sea Colony is a large condominium complex between Bethany Beach and South Bethany. The sandy beach there is reserved for residents. North Shores, Henlopen Acres, Indian Beach and a string of high-end, often gated communities north of Bethany are also closed to the public, as is Middlesex Beach just south of Sea Colony."

Regardless, the orginal poster should not have an issue. Sea Colony is the only "private" beach access in the immediate area, and they can go around it easily.

One of the nicest beaches in the area is the Fenwick Island State Park, a 10 minute drive south of Bethany. Wide beach, more gradual drop off into ocean, especially at low tide, and NO buildings...except a nice little snack bar with good hot dogs and burgers and big restroom/changing facilities/showers. Worth the daily fee for a nice day at the beach.
