An Aussie who is getting confused on travel to Space Centre

Hi,

We are planning a trip to the US and would like to visit the Space Centre at Cape Canaveral after we have spent a few days in Washington DC. What is the best way of getting to CC from Washington DC? Fly or train or bus? I have read somewhere where there isn't a train service to this part of your country. We do not want to hire a car as we don't feel confident of driving on the other side of the road. From CC we are probably going to travel across to New Orleans. Is flying our best option?

Thanks

Fly to Orlando then rent a car or use a shuttle service which you can find by searching Orlando. Its 45 miles from here .

Another option if price was cheaper is to fly into Jacksonville and it it about a 2 hr drive south to Canavaral and they would have to rent a car, but then they could go to St Augustine and also by Daytona. Just a thought.

There are two Amtrak trains a day from Washington DC to Jacksonville and Orlando FL. The trip takes about 18 hours, which seems inconvenient compared to flying.

If you travel to Orlando, there are day tours to Kennedy SC offered by several companies, such as Gray Line, for about $99 per person. They pick up at local hotels. You can also hire a car and driver for the day; it is an easy 45-50 minute trip from the Orlando Airport to Kennedy, but taxis are too expensive unless the rate can be negotiated.

Kennedy is very rewarding. I was just there 4 days ago to see the launch of an Atlas V with a milsat, and passed near launch complex 39A, where STS-134 with the orbiter Endeavour is being readied for launch.

You could also fly into Orlando and use a shuttle to go over to a hotel along the beach at Cape Canaveral or Cocoa Beach, to take in a Florida beach while there. The taxi ride from those cities to Kennedy would be more reasonable, but it is still about 25 minutes.

Finally, you could go to Titusville to spend the night, and the taxi ride is only 5-10 minutes. However, there isn't much else to see, as Titusville isn't directly on the ocean.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I will look into an Amtrack Train into Orlando and then joining a tour from there to CC. I think it would be nice just to see some of the countryside as we travel down.
