Transport while at Cape Canaveral

Hi,

We are staying for two nights prior to a cruise and want to visit the Space Centre and do an airboat tour with Midway. Are we best to hire a car from the airport in Orlando or are there local shuttle options to attractions in the area?

Thanks.

You might find a shuttle to the space center but doubt there will be one to the airboat ride. We don't have much in the way of public transport. There is a shuttle bus that runs around the Cocoa Beach area and maybe to the port. Look at www.scat.com (Space Coast Transit Authority). For the most part you would be better off to rent a car. There are places like Merritt Island Wildlife Preserve and Cocoa Village that you would want a car to get to.

Midway is halfway to Orlando. I know of no public transit that goes that far west from Titusville. SCAT route #2 only gets out as far as SR 50 at I-95.

There are two other airboat rides, Grasshopper and Twister, west of Cocoa off SR 520. The #8 bus gets out closer to those, but still not all the way.

For two days in the area and your activities, a rental car is really your best option. You can rent at the airport and then turn it in near the port just before your cruise, and they will take you to the cruise terminal. Avis, Budget, Dollar/Thrifty, Enterprise/Alamo, and Hertz all have offices near the port. If you have two or more in your party, you will be surprised how affordable cars are compared to shuttles, and driving from the airport and around Cape Canaveral / Covoa Beach is easy because there isn't heavy traffic.

In my opinion get the car. This is a very easy area to get around and more than the sights are dinner and other errands. Turn it in the morning of the cruise and the car company will shuttle you to the ship.

Thanks for advice. I think we have decided to get private transfers between airport and Cape Canaveral then hire a car for a couple of days to get around..bit wary of traffic out of Orlando Airport (navigating LAX has put us off!!).

Thanks PhotoTravels for the tips on the other airboat companies, will check them out :)

If you are tired, private transfer may be good. However, drive from MCO to Cape is very easy on toll expressway with little traffic, almost rural; nothing like Century Blvd in LA. Either way will work.

Have a great trip!

Getting out of the airport can be a little confusing but once on the Beachline its a straight shot to Port Canaveral. If staying in Cocoa Beach you can exit the beachline onto 520 or stay on the beachline to PC then head south about 10 min. Pretty easy drive.

The road around MCO is a circle. Use the north exit and look for SR 528 east just off airport property. If you choose not to have a Sunpass, stay to the right at the toll booths to pay cash (it will look like an exit). If you can do those two things, the drive over to Cocoa Beach is very easy. Once on 528, the first traffic light you will see will be about 45 miles later in Cape Canaveral when the road turns into A1A.
