Accomodations Gulf Front

We have never been to Clearwater, we are leaving Disney and coming over June 27-30 and would like to find a Gulf Front room. Any suggestions??? Alot of people (i Have noticed) has recommended the Hilton any place else??? I also noticed that one of the reviews said there is alot of construction and that we should find something NORTH of Pier 60, any comments?? I would hate to waste alot of vacation time stuck in construction traffic.

Also are there putt-putts and go kart places to go to??? We have never been to Clearwater and I know nothing about it, we were even thinking about going back to Daytona Beach if Clearwater wasn't nice. A few comments said it was not a nice place so now I am getting worried, I hate to book a place and spend all that money and not even like the area PLEASE HELP!!!!!

There is quite a bit of construction going on on the beach. No difference N or S of the pier really. It is mainly some buildings being constructed and road work. Nothing actually affecting the beach itself. All restaurants and bars and shops are open. I have heard from people that were put off by it, and from some that said it didn't affect their stay much, if any at all. I don' think the construction will hamper traffic TOO much (especially during your weekday stay), just the eyesore of it and some noise if you are closeby. The Hilton really is the largest and nicest that is directly on the main part of the beach. I have heard the Hilton will start renovations Jul-Nov. No go-carts, but kids really love the 'Captain Memo' pirate ship cruise. I believe the putt-putt on the beach is still open. There is the Sea Screamer speedboat rides, dolphin encounter trips and the Clearwarter Marine Aquarium, all of which are on the beach. A short drive South in Treasure Island is Johns Pass for a day trip for lunch, a variety of shopping, ice cream on the boradwalk, drinks etc.

Just South and over the bridge from Clearwater Beach is Sand Key. It is less crowded and quieter than Clearwater Beach. There is the Sheraton Sand Key there that is gulfside, and accross the street a Marriott that is bayside.

We just came back from Clearwater. There is so much construction by the Hilton, and it was so crowded there, and one of the main roads were closed. We stayed at the Marriott on Sand Key. It is acrooss the street from the Gulf, but on the Bay. It was beautiful. Every room is a suite with a great view of the Bay. If you insist on staying right on the Gulf, you could stay accross the street at the Sheraton...nice hotel but the Marriott is nicer and it has a nicer pool area. Iris

For MarkBee: will the construction around the Hilton be dying down by the winter season? I'm coming in Feb. 08, hoping most of the Hilton rennovations will be completed by then.

Also, any other restaurant recommendations for those who are not particularly into seafood? I did read your suggestion for frenchy's rockaway on another post.

Thanks.

I have heard the Hilton renovations will be done Jul-Nov of this year, so the work on the hotel itself should be done by Feb. But the construction of streets and other buildings will probably still be going on in Feb. As far as other restaurants, sorry, but I really can't recomend any others, There are some other restaurants, but really if I go to the beach to eat, I always go to Frenchys. www.heilmansbeachcomber.com has been on Clearwater Beach for a long time and I hear it is very good, but I have never eaten there.
