It kind of depends what you are wanting. The more crowded, and active area will be near Pier60, which is in the middle of the beach. When you enter the beach, there will be a traffic circle/round-a-bout in the road. Take the 4th exit of the circle to the Pier60 parking lot.

If wanting a little less crowded, and quieter area, take the 3rd exit our of the traffic circle. This will be heading North. After just a minute or two, you will pass the large Sandpearl Resort on the Left. Shortly after that, there will be a small Fire Dept house also on the Left. Turn Left right after the fire house into the Rockaway Parking Lot. From this lot there is beach access. And, on either end of the parking lot, is 2 great places for a casual meal and/or drinks, Frenchy's Rockaway Grill, and the Palm Pavilion.

Be advised, until the new parking garage opens, parking on the beach is VERY hard to come by on a weekend/holiday. No problem finding parking on weekdays though.

Some fun things in the area

Markbee:

We are heading to the beach for a day from Orlando as well. Are there public rinse showers and bathrooms where we can rinse off the little kids and change their suits before the drive back to Orlando?

There are shower facilities. I'm not 100% sure if there are on the Northern end, but there are near pier60. There will be outside showers where you can rinse off, but the inside, change clothes type of place is nearer Pier60. Unless there is one on the North end that I am not aware of.

Thank you. My 6-yr old daughter is really into collecting shells. Are there areas where shells are found and what time of day do we need to arrive to find them?

Parking meters or parking lots? Do we need to bring a roll of quarters?

Bring quarters. The meters are $1 per hour.

Usually, the farther North you go on the beach, the better the shelling is, basically because it is less crowded and hasn't been picked over as much by others.

TravellerOfNJ, if you want to go to just as nice a place as Clearwater Beach and just as quick to get to (maybe even quicker) and not have to pay $1/hr to park, try Ft. DeSoto Park. It was voted the best beach not too long ago. It is not as commercial as CB and there's a small toll to go over the causeway - less than a dollar I believe. The kids should find it interesting exploring the old fort ruins there in addition to enjoying the beach.

The beach areas have picnic benches, some of which are covered. And most times, there's a "roach coach", LOL, for the snacks you forgot to bring.

Chuts:

Thanks for the suggestion. By the time we get to the beach, we will have already suffered from half-a-week of WDW/Sea World, and are looking for a chance to recover. Bringing our own food, so having a roach coach for the sodas/drinks sounds great.
