Is Clearwater for us ? .....

We are a family of 4 with 2 boys (9&5). We are going to be in Florida next April for a couple of weeks and usually we just visit Orlando & all the theme parks however, this time we really fancy venturing further afield and seeing what else Florida has to offer. We are planning on renting a villa in Orlando but we were thinking that perhaps a few nights somewhere else would be nice. Hopefully somewhere with nice beaches and restaurants but not too quiet so that there's nothing for the kids to see or do. Not sure if this would be a good area as I've heard people say it's nice but don't really know anything about it so figured the best place to start would be here !

Any suggestions ?

Sounds like it would be perfect. FL has soooo much more to offer!

You can get by with no, or very little driving once on the beach, walk to just about everything. It is an active beach, with lots of activities and things to do.

Cocoa Beach is another suggestion and closer. More "old school" FL.

Ocean vs Gulf.

Both are great to visit. Have fun !!

I would strongly suggest Clearwater Beach for your children-there is so much to do. We have been to Clearwater frequently and my children love it. Make sure you go on the Pirate Ship Cruise and if you have a chance to-go to Clearwater Marina. There is a movie coming out in the fall about a dolphin who has been rescued there-named Winter. It is a really cool place and we could spend hours there. There is a playground near the pier where there is nightly entertainment. The only thing I would say is that April is Spring Break time, so it is a crowded-not bad & rowdy-but crowded, so be prepared for that. Have a great time!

Mominthepark mentioned the Clearwater Marina, but she meant to say the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, which is not at the Marina. The website is www.seewinter.com -- a reference to the celebrity dolphin.

Yes the movie is expected to come out later on this year with Morgan Freeman we seen him while we were staying at the Sandpearl resort. Actually opposite our room. You should definitely visit the aquarium. I recommend the Hilton Clearwater or the Sandpearl resort both are are on the beach but the Hilton is cheaper. We have stayed there in Clearwater on 3 occasions while staying in Orlando as well. The boat trips are amazing as you see plenty of dolphins, the little toot is the best for this as the boat is very small and they come very close. The tropic boat tours include drinks and the crew are very friendly and include a restroom. We have been during Spring break, no hassle what-so-ever, though the beach is very crowded it is possible to find a quieter spot further up as the beach is huge. Brown Boxer restaurant/bar is great for sports on the TV, food and arcade games and pool table. Mandalay bay is a great bar and offers some cheap drinks and live music.

Clearwater has a minor league baseball team called the Clearwater threshers. Not the biggest fan of baseball myself, but it offers a great day out only about $6 and $5 for a child in the field box.

The area is walkable and you feel very safe and includes the usual seaside shops, fast food restaurants such as Subway and McDonalds. The beach is out of this world and the area is very much a paradise.

If you want to go to different restaurants or have game of mini golf in the Clearwater beach area you can hop on the jolley trolley http://www.clearwaterjolleytrolley.com/ or if you want to go to downtown Clearwater you can catch the Suncoast beach trolley to visit such places as Coachman park which holds events throughout the year
