Clearwater or Destin????

Trying to decide between visiting Clearwater or Destin for Spring Break this year, which will be begin April 22nd. We will be staying for 5 nights. It will be my 8 year old son, my husband and myself (we are in our early 30s).

Last year we visited the Destin area, and we truly loved it! My husband is a Hilton Honors member so we used his points to stay at the Hilton Sandestin Resort. This resort was top notch! We are seasoned travelers, therefore our expectations are a little on the higher side. The only bad thing I can say about the Hilton Sandestin is it is a little remote from the "actual" Destin area. We took a cab to dinner one night (we were going to be having a few drinks and didn't want to drive back with our son in the car), and we ended up paying $80 in cab fares for a 5-mile trip!!! Nevertheless, we loved the area and would return in a heartbeat.

This year we plan to put my husband's Hilton Honor points to use again. My son loves the Dolphin Tale movie, and he has been asking to go see "Winter" (the dolphin). So, I have been looking at Clearwater. I am a little nervous about the HIlton Clearwater Beach property. There are quite a few mixed reviews. What I do like about it is the location and walking to nearby restaurants, attractions, etc. would be so easy.

So, I am faced with the decision of making the choice of returning to Destin- where I know the resort will be wonderful, and I know we will enjoy it despite being a little out from the "middle of it all." OR go to Clearwater- somewhere new (a different expierence), stay at a location that IS in the "middle of it all", but take the chance of our accomodations not being as up to par as last year. Any advice or insight that would help me in my decision would be very much welcomed!!!

I haven't been to Destin, so I can't really compare them. But, you are correct that the Hilton on CB is right in the middle of it all. Perfect location. Very park-like, pedestrian friendly area, walk to everything. Would not need your car at all, except for the 10 minute drive to see Winter. Good variety of restaurants, bars, shops are all walkable.

Hilton has had recent renovations, and while I haven't been inside of it recently, it looks very nice.

In general, CB is not an upscale place, like Naples, or Marco, but is a very clean, family friendly place.

I visited Hilton Clearwater in November 2010 and thoroughly enjoyed my stay and would definitely go again you have to ignore some reviews and look at the pictures as i had no problems with the bar, reception or the facilities. The Hilton is furnished to a high standard, but the pool area is much smaller than what you were use to at Destin.

If you were to to look at any other hotels other than Hilton i would go for the Sandpearl Resort down the road, but considering you are using your points you should go for Hilton Clearwater Beach you won't regret it in my opinion.

As for recommending Longboat Key the Hilton there is a lower standard and St Petes is not upmarket and neither is the hotel as for Marco Island and Naples i agree with those two destinations as being more upmarket. Amanx just has something against Clearwater Beach.

I don't like big, built up, city beaches with lots of people where parking is expensive and hard to come by.

I rec CWB all the time to those who do like same, and rec'd it just today in fact on another FL forum.

So, do more research before slagging someone off next time?????

I think your son would love the area around the Hilton at Clearwater Beach, including the Pier. Lots of restaurants close by. So much within walking distance. Also, take a walk across the street to the marina, when all of the fishing boats come back with their catches of the day. I find it fascinating to watch them cleaning all the fish. You can also go out on a Pirate Ship or a dolphin sightseeing boat. If you don't mind a lot of action, I think your family would really enjoy Clearwater Beach. And it's beautiful.

I will be in Clearwater at the end of the month for a conference. I haven't been there in twenty five years! So, I"m not much help there. I too like the Destin area. We stayed in Seaside and drove in to Destin frequently. But, my all time favorite beach is Siesta Key off the coast of Sarasota, about an hour south of Tampa - the beach is beautiful, the sand is white and feels like powdered sugar, and stays cool, even in 90 degree weather! The town is charming with some cute stores, great restaurants and you are close to Sarasota with everything you could need or want!

amanx i just can't help myself u slagged the place off before so basically we are having the same pointless argument. Its just your suggestions were conflicting because some of them are not upmarket well not in my opinion, however they may be low rise buildings and have cheaper car parking, but the area isnt as appealing.

It is more appealing to many like me.

Yet I dont' slag you off for liking CWB? Many like high rise high population beaches, and I always rec CWB to those who do. If you can't help yourself, don't post. I am not arguing with you, I dont' even know you so dont take it personally. And stop slagging me off or I will report you as we all have our opinion and yet I can give mine w/o mentionning you? Surely you are adult enough to do the same. Or perhaps not? Do let us know.

but someone who loved Sandestin like the OP is, IMHO, not going to necessarily like CWB. they may do they may not.

Hopefully they will tell us?

Of course you are entitled to your own opinion. Its not an argument just a bit of banter (don't know why i put argument) that is all i don't take it personally and you have an answer for me, but there is no need to report after all you called me childish i just put 'amanx has something against Clearwater Beach'. As for reporting you shouldn't do that as its going to far i'm not an offensive human being at all far from it i will take it personally if you reported me.

I like a range of places that appeal to me for different reasons in terms of restaurants in the area, the beach, the hotels they offer, attractions and the overall look of the area.. The forum is for advice i know i shouldn't, but its not the end of the world and i will stop it sorry.
