where to stay. we have two nights after our cruise

We are flying out of st Pete/clearwater airport. We will not have a car. So we will want to stay somewhere with lots to do walking distants. We will be there the first week in December. The first two nights before our five night cruise we will be staying in ybor city. Now for the last two nights should we stay in clear water beach. Or stay in Tampa. Help. Remember no car. And flying out of clearwater airport. Help with taxi's too.

I think you would enjoy your time at the beach. Clearwater Beach is a lovely resort town with beautiful soft white sand beaches and good restaurants. It is a small area, so most everything is in walking distance. December is a quieter time on the beach, so the area is less busy and the rates are more reasonable. Temperatures in December can vary. the weather could be beautiful beach weather, or cooler if a cold front blows in.

There is a huge difference in the price of rooms on Clearwater Beach. These would be my recommendations in each price range:

High End:

The Sandpearl is a lovely newer, luxury hotel located right on the beach. The Sandpearl is about a 10 minute walk to the Pier and the beach in front of the Sandpearl is quieter than the beach by the Pier.

The Hyatt is another new, luxury hotel. It is located directly across the street from the beach and the Pier. All rooms at the Hyatt are suites with full sized fridges.

The Hilton is located right on the beach and right beside the Pier. This hotel is more moderately priced than the Hyatt or Sandpearl and is not as new. If you book a room with two beds in this hotel - they will be doubles and not queen.

Moderately Priced:

The Holiday Inn is located right on the Gulf of Mexico Gulf of Mexico - but there is a seawall in front of this hotel and not a beach. The beach is a short walk away and the Pier is about a 10 minute walk north of the Pier. They have a nice Gulf front restaurant and bar.

The Pierhouse 60 Hotel is another new hotel, but it is located about 2 blocks off the beach and from the Pier. It does not have a restaurant onsite, but they do provide free breakfast and have a rooftop bar with great views. There are many restaurants in walking distance.

Moderately Priced:

The Travelodge and Magnusson Hotels are located directly across the street from the beach and close to the Pier. These are older hotels but I've been told they are keep clean.

The Palm Pavilion is my favourite moderately priced hotel. it is an older hotel that is located on the north end of the beach. It is kept immaculately clean and renovated. Prices are reasonable, with no extra charges for things like Internet or parking. Rooms are small and there is no elevator - but they do have main floor rooms. There is a nice beachfront restaurant and bar with great views on their patio. The beach here is not as busy as the main beach and beach chair and cabana rentals are cheaper. It is about a 10 to 15 minute walk to the Pier. This hotel is not as centrally located as the other hotel.

You also asked about taxis. Taxis from the Tampa airport are about $65.00 - so my guess is the price would be a bit higher from Ybor City and cheaper than that to the St. Pete Clearwater Airport.

Hope you have a wonderful cruise and enjoy your time in Florida.

Plus, even if you didn't want the longer taxi ride to the airport, there is basically nothing very near the St. Pt/Clw aiport that will be of any interest. There are some hotels in the area, but you would have your hotel, the pool, and a few chain restaurants nearby, but nothing compared to the fun time you'll have on Clearwater Beach. You could also check www.supershuttle.com for cruise port-hotel-airport transport.

The Pier House 60 Hotel is new, moderately priced, and in a great location. Easy walk to everything on the beach. The Hilton and Hyatt are right in the same area.
