Water activities in April?

We're planning a stay in Daytona Beach/Daytona Beach Shores for early April. How likely is it that the water will be warm enough to swim and/or surf? Which beach areas are best for 1) not overly crowded and 2) safety (water activities and to be on the beach in the evening or early morning)? In the off-chance the water's warm enough for surfing, do you have any recommendations for a good company to provide surf lessons for a beginning teen near the Holiday Inn & Suites on North Atlantic or the HI Express in Daytona Shores?

When we were there in April, it was cloudy and windy, not our type of water weather. Of course, it may be warm and sunny when you go this year.

The waves are fairly nice at Daytona, however we didn't notice anyone offering surfing lessons. Maybe we just missed them?

Anyway, good luck and enjoy!

I'd love to know this too as we are wanting to come the first week of April as well, but we're unsure of the water temperatures this time of year. I hope someone who knows can reply!

I have heard of surf lessons in Cocoa Beach at Ron Jons, but not in Daytona. If you don't know what you are doing surfing wise in Daytona, I would be very careful in the spring.

The water isn't clear, and there are some juvenille sharks further out that might not know that you aren't food that breed close to the inlet.

I am NOT trying to scaremonger, but just make sure you know what you are doing.

Thanks for your reply! That helps a lot and the information about the sharks is good to know, too.

We do usually see a few people surfing each year off the beach where we stay in south DB.

We often see dolphins swimming out there too.

We have seen a couple rays close to shore while wading.

I don't know the last time, if ever, anyone was bothered by sharks near there? Of course, it is the ocean and there are all sorts of fish etc. in the ocean. So, any time you are any ocean, you are somewhat exposed.

It can give one pause though.

Some links for you.

Don't allways believe the water temps posted, if the wind is from the west the warmer surface water will be blown out upwelling colder water.

We can have 60° to 65° water in July with strong west winds.

Make sure you surf in the required 'Zone'!
