Crystal Beach Review-saw some oil

We were in Crystal Beach last week. There were lots of tar balls on Wednesday and we actually saw oil in the water. They were pools of oil, but dispersed as the waves hit the beach. We only saw it on Wednesday and we only saw the oil for 15 minutes or so. It was really sad, the waves looked really dark. We never saw oil or tar balls other than Wedneday. It must have moved out of the area. We didn't get in the water after that, but there were lots of other people in the water. Destin was still beautiful and we had a great time. It was a very relaxing vacation. We drove to Seaside one evening and had a great time.

One observation is that they only post the oil signs near the public access, so if you are staying beachfront you may not notice the signs.

We are staying at the Villages of Crystal Beach and have been here since Sunday. There is oil present, mainly just chips in the sand and we have had a few spots on our bathing suits. It is not a big deal, you just have to expect it, consider not wearing a new bathing suit. It is not obvious in the water and you can avoid stepping in chips on the shoreline. The June grass was far worse than the oil, but was here one day, gone the next. The only thing making oil worse is it stains the bathing suits, even after using Dawn, which is available at the beach entrance here at Pompano.

Time for nipping was in April. Now with the Tropical Storm/Alex churning in the Gulf it will push oil deeper. We have been coming for 10 years, one year the water had a lot of grass and things we never saw before. The chair man said it was because of a system that passed hundreds of miles away out in the gulf. We arrive July 11 and I told my family we WILL have fun.

So you are still able to swim in the water? I know at Gulf Shores they have been having double red flags flown. We are thinking about coming to Destin in July instead of Gulf Shores.

We were there again today and yes you can swim. The water has been beautiful the last 2 days, free of June grass, but rough waves. The oil is there in the form of oil chips, they look like small mulch chips and feel like a gummy bear. Out of 6 of us we have had small amounts of oil twice on our bathing suits in the last 3 days. You can see small chips in the water occasionally, but generally they do not stick to you and they are no big deal. Also, you just watch where you walk along shoreline and avoid them.
