are we too far away???

we are staying at comfort inn airport west...the addressis 2540 Davie rd .....we are only there for 2 days. We are planning on a fishing trip, but we leave on our cruise the day after our fishing. I see there is plenty of confusion about different comfort inns or suites. all in all there are 4 adults and one child (3).

1) are we too far away to enjoy the area

2) is there anything great in the area

if not.....I'm open to suggestions

our trip is Jan 3....so we need a place to sleep the 3rd and 4th

It so happens I drove right by that Comfort Inn tonight. It's not in the "tourist" area- it is actually across the street from large "educational complex " of a university, a large junior college and several public and private schools ( "the Nova Complex". ) There are a Waffle House and a Shoney's restaurant right near it and the whole road has many fast food places and gas stations, so certainly nothing scenic and not much I can think of to do- it's not far from the Hard Rock Casino , but I don't know their policies about children( perhaps allowed but not in the casino, perhaps not welcome at all). You couuld also google Flamingo Gardens which is nearby - some wildlife and and interesting tropical trees etc. Sawgrass Mall would also be out that way, but again a car would be needed- it's north and west of there. If I've overloooked something , hopefully someone else will remember it.

The good news though is that if you have a car it is just off I-595 and if you avoid the rush hours and don't mind freeway traffic, you can head east and I'll bet you're at the beach in about 20 minutes( rush hour will be quite slow am and pm). I know lots of people use it pre/post cruise and I think they piovide a shuttle to the airport and the port. It is likely one of the more reasonably priced lodging choices, but without a car yopu won't find much in the immediate area to do.

Thank you for clarification....at least now I know its a safe area......but I may look for something closer.....but at least at this point we do have somewhere safe to lay our heads. But I guess now that leaves me looking for a closer location to the port.

We won't have a car. and taking a taxi to the marina for some fishing sounds terribly expensive.

You may have to take two taxis. Florida law is that a child of 4 must be in a restraint. I don't know if you can squeeze 5 in a taxi. I have seen some minivan type taxis but most are just regular type cars If you are calling for a taxi you should request a mini van.

The only thing of interest in Davie is Flamingo Gardens, which is pretty cool:

Davie is a moderate drive from Ft. Laud, not too far but still inconvenient. Since you're only there two days and one is a fishing day, I think the location would be okay. By #2 do you mean the Davie or Ft. Laud areas?

You might consider renting a car as it will likely be cheaper than the taxi fare and will give you more flexibility- I know some visitors hesitate to do that ,but rental acras here are generally not expensive and you could do so much more- probably cheaper too than relocating to the beach arae.

The previous poster has asked a good question that got me thinking- there will likely be a lot more to do in tehe area of your fishing boat ( is it Bahia Mar marina or somewhere else?) so you might plan to stay at the east end of town on that day for dinner etc.- maybe at Bubba Gumps- a chain restaurant but well reveiwed- has outdoor dining right across from the beach- it's chld friendly too,

thanks everyone. By #2 I meant in the Davie area....but now I see that it may be better to consider either the car option or the idea of moving closer to the port.

right now another location has caught my eye, days inn bahai cabana...but as of yet I haven't looked at availablity....or cost

NOOOO!! Bahia Cabana is a very substandard hotel that has been trashed by Spring Breakers. It's also very rowdy and no place for a child to stay. They ahave a cute bar and grill to dine in , but absolutely a poor choice for lodging. Stay where you are and rent a car!

8. Re: are we too far away???

so we are arriving around midnight at the airport....will we be able to rent a car...or have them drop one off in the morning to the hotel? as for drop off are we better to find a company to drop off a car and pick it up...so that we can still take advantage of the shuttle from the hotel to the cruise port? From what I understand there isn't anywhere to drop off the rental at the cruiseport.

Please let me know if I am off on any of these points.

to get to sawgrass mills.....is the mall open late? my mother in law wants to do some shopping...and I thought after supper we could do that.

As always, cruisers get accomodations far away from what's really happening in Ft. Lauderdale or any departure city. And what's with the shopping????? Who goes to a beautiful location to SHOP????
