I think I would want a better idea of how upscale you want this resort to be.. and what time of year you are coming so we can see what fits the budget.

Since West Palm is about 45 minutes by car north of Ft. Lauderdale, I think you would want to stay toward the north of our town. maybe Embassy Suites in Deerfield Beach ( right on the beach) or , if you want something smaller , one of the 'mom and pop " style places in Lauderdale by the Sea.

Much depends on your budget, time of year you are coming , and how far you are willing to drive to visit relatives. Delray Beach , north of us , has some oceanfront hotels and would be much closer to West Palm.

See if you can fill in a little more information- beachfront resorts here can cost $300+ per night at some times of year ( Jan- March) and many of our hotels are across the street from the beach , not on it- would that be suitable? What sort of facilities do you want? Mom and pop places are less expensive , but may not have spas or on site restaurants etc..

I agree with Lulu that Deerfield Beach would be a good option. There's also a nice little "Mom and Pop" called the Buccaneer that you might want to look into. I checked out www.sunny.org/ssl to find the property and here is what is says.

Your hosts: Mary, Dave, Nancy & Pat. One & two bedroom fully furnished apartments with full size kitchens. Peaceful tropical location, steps to the Blue Wave beach, fishing pier, a quaint village of shops and oceanfront restaurants. Free surfing lessons. On bus line connecting to Tri-Rail commuter train and Amtrak. Nearby fitness center, pharmacy, marketplace and five minutes to golf and tennis. Short drive to museums, major outlet shopping, performing arts, casino's and Las Vegas style entertainment.

DEERFIELD BUCCANEER RESORT APARTMENTS

120 N. Ocean Blvd. Deerfield Beach, FL 33441

Phone: 954-426-4672

Fax: 954-421-9306

It might be a good option for you!

As Lulu said ... budget, budget, budget ... without that they cannot help much except to give generalizations.

If being closer to WPB is really not so important , the two major beachfront resorts here are Lago Mar and Harbor Beach Marriott, both on the south end of our beach and somewhat secluded ( most especially so Lago Mar). The only other resort right on the beach would be Pelican Grande toward the north end of the beach , but certainly not as extensive as the other two. All our other hotels are across the street from the beach , as the city owns most of it. There will be a Sheraton Beach Hotel opening in January that is also "on the sand" but it is not as much a resort as a hotel, with fewer facilities.

Prices will be at the top of the range in February for all of these. I am also aware of a fairly new beachfront resort in Boca Raton , to our north called the Boca Raton Beach Club- which is a newly constructed part of the Boca Raton Resort , which previously had no beachfront rooms. It is usually a very expensive but high end choice..

I would still keep Embassy Suites Deerfield in the mix- it is really lovely and may be the most reasonable in price of those listed. It has a dining facility and an on site spa as do the others I have mentioned. Since you are looking in mid February, be aware that earlier February - around Feb. 7, will be greatly impacted by the Super Bowl- you will likely see double our normal prices and sell outs at many places- later in the month will still be pricey ,but not quite as bad- considering it is high season for both tourists and heavy cruise traffic here.

Harbor Beach Marriott, to me, is one awesome property! I love their restaurants and spa, and especially the "outdoor living room" which is their new terrace.

Their 3030 Ocean is one of the best restaurants in FLL and their beach is private so you can enjoy a cocktail out there while you bask in the sun's rays.

It's my first choice!

Thank you all for great information. Think we may have narrowed our choice to Lago Mar resort. Would appreciate any further feedback. Is it possible to take a taxi there from FLL airport for a reasonable rate? Do we really need to rent a car or would there be alternate transportation or a water taxi to get downtown to shops, etc. Do not plan much sightseeing, just relaxation.

Taxi fare from FLL to Lago Mar would be about $20- and there is no extra passenger charge. However, Lago Mar is very secluded and quite a long walk from the main road where Water Tand various other transportation picks up- I mean more than 2 miles just to get out to the road- it might not be the best choice without a car- take a second look at Harbor Beach Marriott which is more walkable - and lets wait for Harry or Jody- two frequent posters who often stay at Lago Mar , to check in - they always rent a car but might be able to give you a sense of what walking anywhere from there would involve- harry does liek to walk when he comes down.. If you just want to stay there and relax it would be fine, but I think it is one of the few spots here where no car is a problem unless you want to taxi everywhere.

I'm going to go to Google and ask it to measure the walking distance from Lago Mar to Best Western Oceanside , which is near the Water Taxi and I'll post theexact result- Lago Mar has a long access road which helps the place maintain it's privavcy , but it is a very long walk- I have only driven it myself.

Hmm- Google says it is 1.2 miles and a 20 minute walk- I really think it is longer- maybe it just seemed that way- but at any rate- you can judge if you want to walk that far just to get out of the complex and on to the main beach each time you want to leave.

I also need to comment that unlike many northern towns , we have no Downtown - just a couple of blocks of banks , courthouses and office buildings- we have no "downtown " shopping area. All our shopping areas are malls and pretty far away from the beach - there is a grocery store and a few very small shops on 17th St across the bridge from your hotel ( again a bit of a walk, bus or trolley ride) and the nearest real mall is Galleria about 5 miles north I'd say. There are T Shirt and trinket shops along the beach and one drug store- no real shopping to speak of- but I'm not sure what you hope to purchase. I'm not sure how to help you visualize it , but coming from CT , I know how different the situation is down here.

I've never stayed at Lago Mar without a car because, as Lulu says, it is a bit isolated.Because of the way the canals are situated, it makes quite a long walk to get to the water taxi. If you like walking the beach, it is much shorter. It is about a 10 minute walk to the Marriott, and then you can cut through their property to the street, and walk to the water taxi, which is about another 10 minute walk. Lago doesn't charge for parking if you do decide to get a car.

Lago is a beautiful property, and is my 1st choice when I stay in FLL.
