Fort Walton in February/ 2-day Stay

Hi all! My boyfriend and I are planning a road-trip to New Orleans and one of our stops is Fort Walton Beach. We were wondering if anyone could give us some insight on some of the best things to do here (besides the beach). We were hoping to get your opinions on 1.) the best beaches to walk on for shelling; 2.) best place to watch a Gulf Coast sunset; 3.) some good restaurants to try in town and 4.) some good "nightlife" bars to try. Or if you think of anything else that would be fun for the day, just let us know! We try to stay budget-friendly, but we will splurge if it's worth it :) We are both in our upper-20s and just enjoy making memories with each other. We also really like scenic drives, but we don't want to go too far since we will be heading to New Orleans within a few days. Thank you all for your help and advice in advance and we look forward to hearing from you!!!

1. Navarre Beach has consistently the most shells, but Destin has had quite a number recently. This really depends upon the surf and the tides.

2. Sunsets. Find a stretch of sand that faces west. Voila. Actually, we like Dewey Destins on the Bay to eat on the porch and watch the sunset. Harry T's has an amazing upper deck that looks out over the pass.

3. McGuires. Tommy Mattoines. Mama Clemenzas. Pandoras. are all pretty reliably good.

4. Depends on the scene you are looking for.

5. On your way to New Orleans, if you aren't in a hurry, jump over the Navarre Bridge and take the beach route to Pensacola. There are long stretches of Gulf National Seashore (and could also be shelling outing). Jump back over the Pensacola Bridge to Hwy 98 and jump on the I-110 to the interstate. Since New Orleans is only about 4 hours away, even if you spend two hours walking where the mood hits to stop on the beach, you still have plenty of time to make check-in.

Thanks so much for your suggestions! I've heard that Navarre beach has really good shelling so we will be sure to check it out. Who knows what it will be like in a few months ya know? We will actually be stopping in Biloxi, MS before New Orleans so that scenic route through the Gulf National Seashore is definitely do-able. As far as bar scenes go, we are pretty relaxed. We like to enjoy a good drink (preferably a bourbon) in a good atmosphere with good music. But again, thank you so much for the ideas and info!
