First timer would love info.

We are planning our first visit to Holmes Beach/AMI this summer and have rented a house on 56th Street. Any info about must see/do while there and Tropical Storm Debby damage, closest beach access and conditions would be greatly appreciated.

You can likely access beach at the end of 56th st. If not one street either way will have access. The ends of most streets have public access. So much to do. #1 ride the trolley from one end to the other. Lots of restuarants, shopping, etc. The damage is not all that bad, although for those of us who live here, it is unfortunate. Please respect the dunes that are still standing. There is a "river" between the dunes and the beach. It is not bad, but used to be sand.

Let us know what you need in the way of info, and who will be visiting. different suggestions for couples, young and old, and families.

Thanks for reply, we're a family of 3 traveling with our adult daughter. We would love suggestions for dinner restaurants, scooter rental and fishing charters and outings. Any suggestions are appreciated.

For any kind of rental try Fun and More or Beach Bums. Both have good reputations and are on here frequently. They can probably also point you to fishing charters.

Lots of restaurants. All are casual (except Beach Bistro), most have good food. Must eat at Beach House, Bridge Street Bistro, Rod and Reel, The Waterfront, and Blue Marlin. All are good, Beach House outside is waterfront. Sandbar is okay, food not special, but toes in the sand.

Do take a ride down to Mote Aquarium. It is well worth it. They also do a pontoon boat into Sarasota Bay, often trailed by dolphins.

We are enjoying our week on the island, thank you for all your suggestions! We have rented scooters to explore and tried staying off the main streets. We've eaten at The Waterfront, The Sandbar and Rod and Reel we enjoyed all of them. We've had enough seafood for a bit and want to pick up pizza for a relaxing night at the house. Any suggestions? Thanks

Most people really like Oma's pizza in Bradenton Beach! Vinnie and Cheryl's pizza has had mixed reviews here on the boards, I believe.

We are also first timers to the Island and haven't booked yet but looking at a small condo in Holmes Beach, around 71 or 72nd street. We are going in mid September and want to know if the beach in that area is ok, or should we look more north to Anna Maria beaches? We like to walk and your island sounds great.

Thanks for any info.

You will be fine. It is a great island to walk. A hint, take flip flops with you, or wear them, as the trolley does not allow barefoot travelers. You never know when you might need a ride back.
