Cocoa Beach vs. Iniatlantic beach

Heading to Kissimmee in March with 8 year old grandkids. Want to do a beach day and prepared to drive an hour and a bit to wiggle our toes in the sand and play in the water. Any suggestions on the best bang for our time driving? (The gulf coast, while lovely, is just too much road time for 1 day on the beach in our opinion). (oops...INDiatlantic)

If you follow US 192 east from Kissimmee, you hit the Atlantic coast at Indialantic. There are some larger hotels there, but it is a mostly residential stretch of beach. There's a small park on highway A1A just north of where 192 comes in, but not much else for the day-tripper.

It will be faster to get to Cocoa Beach using SR 417 and SR 528, because it is expressway all the way. There will be a few dollars in tolls on that route, but it shouldn't take much more than an hour.

Cocoa Beach has more developed public beaches. Lori Wilson Park is the best, but Fischer Park, Shepard Park, the Cocoa Beach Pier, and Jetty Park farther north in Cape Canaveral are all good. All but Wilson Park have some kind of parking or admission fee.

If you are there at a busy time, say a summer weekend, those beaches will be crowded, but there are always other beaches along the 16 miles of coast that will give you plenty of room to spread out. There is liberal beach access every few blocks, many with free parking.

There are also some beaches around Patrick AFB, about halfway between Wilson Park and Indialantic. Use highway A1A to move up and down the coast.

Cocoa Beach also has many restaurants and activities. Take a look at the TA forum and page for there and Cape Canaveral.
