First time to gulf... What area to stay in?

Hello helpful people,

I'm trying to find the right area for my husband and I to stay a few days. We've been to the east coast of Florida and the Keys, so am familiar with Florida, just not the gulf coast. After landing in Tampa we want to head straight to someplace Like St Pete's, Clearwater, or in between. I picture us staying on or a short walk to a beach that has people for people watching, and some snack bars or bars but not too much craziness. Can anyone give me a clue as to where to look for accommodation? I've been looking at Indian Rocks area but it may be too quiet?

St. Pete Beach sounds like a good fit. IRB is pretty slow, and walkable places will be limited. Clearwater Beach can get very busy at times, St. Pete Beach is kind of in the middle. Not as dense of crowds, but still places walkable for drinks, ice cream, meals, etc.
